🏈 Being from Missouri, I'm an unapologetic Kansas City Chiefs fan. So, of course, I heard Andy Reid's story about Taylor baking Pop-Tarts for the O-line. 👏 While I don't eat them myself, I've got to give a slow clap to the Pop-Tarts brand for staying relevant. Here are some reasons why I think this will work well for the Pop-Tarts brand: -Andy Reid brought the brand into the conversation organically. They didn't force their way into a conversation. -They reacted quickly and found a way to continue that relevant conversation in an entertaining way. -Donating to a Kansas City charity is their 'payment' to keep their brand in the news for a few more days. -They incentivized interaction between the Pop-Tarts and Taylor Swift brands by offering a win-win challenge. "Give us your recipe, and we'll double our donation to the charity" is a tremendous win-win message. The Pop-Tarts brand is undoubtedly hoping for a deeper collaboration than this, but what a great place to start. Sounds delicious!! To add to the festive atmosphere everyone can come dressed in Wimbledon-inspired attire! 2.    Chocolate Bake-off: Host a chocolate-themed baking competition. Everyone can bring in their best chocolate-based desserts, such as cakes, brownies, or cookies. Have a panel of judges or let everyone vote to determine the winners, with prizes for the top creations. 3.    Chocolate Fundraiser: Set up a chocolate sale with proceeds going to a charity of the staff’s choice. You can donate homemade chocolate goodies or buy chocolates from a local shop. This not only celebrates the occasion but also contributes to a good cause.

What can David Portnoy eating pizza teach us about nonprofit rating systems? If you don't know who that is, he founded Barstool Sports, an extremely popular media company. One Bite Ratings is one of the most popular recurring segments, where David reviews pizza places mainly across the United States. The premise is simple: David takes one bite of a slice of pizza and then gives it a score from 0 to 10. Despite the "One Bite" name, he usually takes multiple bites. Portnoy's candid reviews, quirky style, and the occasional presence of celebrities have made the series a favorite among many pizza enthusiasts and Barstool fans. He recently rated some places near me in Schenectady, NY. The ratings are pretty subjective but have become influential, and a high score from Portnoy can be a boon for the reviewed pizzeria. Contrast this with a new The Chronicle of Philanthropy story by Drew Lindsay about Charity Navigator, where the shift toward focusing away from overhead and toward impact and other metrics is proving to be a tall order. Ratings in any industry will be lightning rods for discussion, but here's a significant difference that nonprofits must realize. When David reviews a pizza place and likes it or hates it, it has minimal bearing on the public's perception of pizza places in general. But with nonprofits, people's experiences with nonprofits on an individual level can positively or negatively impact whether donors trust charities in general. For example, we're seeing this play in recent research from the Lilly School. Regardless of your view of David Portnoy as a person or charitable rating systems, the takeaway is that nonprofits have a higher standard of public trust and fiduciary responsibility than the broader for-profit market. Fair or not, you're going to have to work harder. This will be a team effort to contextualize the nonprofit sector's role in people's everyday lives. That's why I've loved spotlighting stories from leaders of small to midsized nonprofits. Unfortunately, pointing out a few great examples isn't enough. This will be an industry-wide effort. Luckily, there's significant behind-the-scenes work happening in efforts like Fundraising.AI and the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, where I'm confident we can pull it off. At least we'll know where to hold the pizza party when we celebrate.
