The World Bank has called for a #shift #away from #animal #agriculture #subsidies as a key strategy in #fighting #climate #change. 🌎🔥 “#Subsidies #keep the #prices of animal products #artificially #low, making plant-based alternatives seem expensive in comparison. In the US, livestock and seafood producers have received over $59 billion in subsidies since 1995, while #plant-#based #proteins and #alternatives have received just $124 million over the past two decades [#less #than 1/3 of 1% of U.S. food production subsidies]. As awareness of the #environmental #impact of #animal #agriculture increases, calls for #subsidy #reform continue to intensify.” If not for us, let’s reduce our reliance on animal agriculture for our children & grandchildren! 💕

Can’t have sustainability without farmer profitability. Today, we jointly announced with Athian the first-of-its-kind livestock carbon inset market has the first carbon credits verified for sale.   Carbon credits may be a well-known term, but a recent USDA report cited only 3% of farmers are participating in these markets today. Why? Previous offsetting markets weren’t inclusive to farms of all sizes and didn’t deliver benefit. This insetting marketplace will keep the value--economic and reputational --within the dairy value chain.   Elanco is a seed investor in Athian because we believe there is a major opportunity to create value from enteric methane reductions – both for farmers and for the full food value chain. Today’s announcement is a step toward making sure farms of all sizes – from 100 to 100,000 cows – are able to leverage these solutions. If the entire U.S. diary industry implemented just one on-farm sustainability intervention, it would enable the industry to avoid 4.7 million metric tons of CO2e emissions annually from avoided enteric, feed and manure emissions. Breeding cows to emit less methane Methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by cattle, can be significantly reduced in cows bred with a genetic trait to belch less of it. Semex has marketed this genetic trait in 80 countries, where dairy farmers and experts are touting it as a cheap and efficient way to reduce methane emissions.    While marketed as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there are other environmental concerns in the meat industry, such as loss of biodiversity and land use for croplands dedicated to livestock feed production. I recently attended the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) conference held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was really interesting to meet with livestock producers from around the world and understand what challenges and opportunities they are facing. It was clear to me that we need to work together to share what works well and cooperate on common issues. While New Zealand farmers are facing challenges related to climate change, it was clear to me that we are well-placed to tackle them with our red meat production among the most efficient in the world and most farmers already knowing their GHG number. Looking to comparable countries, such as Australia, Ireland, and Canada there are areas where we can work together, such as the complex science needed to reduce methane and nitrous oxide emissions even further and policy settings for setting appropriate targets for short-lived gases. One more attempt by the meat industry to sow confusion where there should be none. Who profits from this? Surely not consumers (or animals). 🔺"Leading European agribusiness groups are using a pro-meat manifesto called the Dublin Declaration to lobby senior EU officials against recommendations for reduced meat consumption in the bloc’s cancer strategy and sustainability policies." 🔺"But the document, which presents itself as a “declaration of scientists”, was written by people with “close ties” to the livestock industry." 🔺"The Dublin Declaration of Scientists on the Societal Role of Livestock, launched at the Irish government agricultural agency Teagasc in October last year, is a short document that argues for the nutritional, environmental and social benefits of meat-eating. 🧫As I now embark on this journey of all things #cellbased, I have written an informative piece on the potential impact of cell-based meat on the #environment. 🦠Cell-based meat has been hailed as a #sustainable alternative to traditional #meat production 🥩 and has garnered attention for its potential to reduce water 💧, land 🌾 and antibiotic 💉 requirements associated with livestock #farming 🐷. ❌However, a recent analysis by researchers from the University of California Davis – yet to be certified by peer review – suggests that scaling up cell-based meat production could have a more significant #environmentalimpact than previously thought. ✍️The below article examines the study’s findings while considering the broader scientific literature on the environmental benefits of cell-based meat 🥓.

From low-carbon fertilisers to healthier livestock, agri-tech is full of opportunities for a better future. We're celebrating some of the biggest success stories to emerge from the Transforming Food Production (TFP) challenge, which reaches its conclusion next year after five years of delivery through BBSRC and Innovate UK. The TFP challenge set out to tackle global challenges in our food system, with the central aim of driving the transition to net zero. It supported innovative approaches to food production and development of new technologies, whilst fostering opportunities for international collaboration and business growth. Public investment in the challenge has totalled over £68 million, catalysing private co-investment of £394 million. Here are just a handful of the innovations supported through TFP: - CCm Technologies are developing novel low-carbon fertilisers from captured carbon dioxide - Dunbia Group is helping beef farmers adopt new technology to manage their herds more efficiently - Peacock Technology are using AI-based computer vision to help farmers monitor the health and fertility of their dairy herds - Brilliant Planet is growing algae to source alternative proteins for aquaculture feed - Entocycle is raising black soldier flies on food waste and using them in aquaculture, animal feed and organic fertiliser - Devenish and Canadian partners at Mara are improving the nutrition of chicken meat by introducing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to feed - Dogtooth Technologies received support to develop a new generation of fruit-picking robots - Spotta is using Internet of Things tech to identify and monitor insect pests, reducing insecticide use by 70% - Dyneval is using AI to improve conception rates in dairy herds - The Uncommon Lab is cultivating pork products from animal cells using innovative processes Read our new report to find out more about all these examples: https://lnkd.in/e6gtG9gF #agritech
