❗️22 million tonnes of plastic leaked into the environment in 2019 (latest data available), with 19.4 Mt being macroplastics due to poor disposal practices.❗️ 💡 The vast majority (19.4 Mt) are macroplastics, and most (82%) found their way into the natural environment as a result of inadequate collection and disposal - aka poor waste management. Other leakage routes include littering or fly-tipping (5%), and marine activities (1%). 💡 Microplastics also make up a sizeable share of total leakage (12%), largely reaching the environment through wear to tyres and road markings, as well as the accidental loss of plastic pellets and washing of synthetic textile fibres. 🌏 Leakage occurs in all regions, but there are significant geographical differences in leakage drivers. OECD countries contribute 14% to the global leakage but 36% of microplastic leakage. Non-OECD countries account for 86% of the plastic leakage, driven mainly by the high amount of mismanaged waste ending up in the environment. 📈 Mismanaged waste leakage has doubled since 2000, highlighting the urgent need for better waste management in growing economies. Addressing these issues is crucial to combat persistent plastic pollution and rising microplastic leakage globally. 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 🙏 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Why should we avoid single-use plastic? 1 Environmental impact: Single-use plastics contribute significantly to pollution, harming ecosystems and wildlife. 2 Long decomposition time: These plastics can take hundreds of years to break down, causing persistent pollution. 3 Marine life at risk: Marine animals often mistake single-use plastics for food, leading to ingestion and entanglement. 4 Microplastics: Single-use plastics break down into tiny particles, infiltrating water bodies and entering the food chain. 5 Greenhouse gas emissions: The production and disposal of single-use plastics contribute to climate change. 6 Resource depletion: Creating single-use plastics requires fossil fuels and natural resources, depleting limited reserves. 7 Landfill overflow: These plastics clog landfills, occupying valuable space and preventing biodegradable waste from decomposing properly. 8 Health concerns: Some single-use plastics may leach harmful chemicals, posing health risks to humans and animals. 9 Unsustainable consumption: The throwaway culture associated with single-use plastics promotes wasteful habits. 10 Eco-friendly alternatives: Choosing reusable materials reduces reliance on single-use plastics and helps conserve resources. #plastic #plastics #plasticpollution

“More than 170 trillion plastic particles are found in the ocean as pollution reaches ‘unprecedented’ levels. A team of international scientists analysed global data collected between 1979 and 2019 from nearly 12,000 sampling points in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. They found a “rapid and unprecedented” increase in ocean plastic pollution since 2005, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. Plastic production has soared in the last few decades, especially single-use plastics, and waste management systems have not kept pace. Only around 9% of global plastics are recycled each year.” Source CNN: https://cnn.it/44LA6og At Billi, we pledge to reduce plastic waste, implement sustainable water solutions, and minimise our environmental impact, all while delivering long-term value to our customers. The key to finding a solution to the global crisis of plastic pollution lies in simplicity. The Global Plastics Treaty should adopt a simple approach by limiting the types of polymers used in plastic products and eliminating problematic plastics altogether. Currently, there are many types of polymers in use, each with different properties and recycling challenges. By limiting the number of polymer types, the process of recycling and managing plastic waste will become more efficient and effective. In addition, by eliminating problematic plastics, the environmental impacts and risks associated with these materials can be significantly reduced. A simple and focused approach can also facilitate compliance and enforcement of plastics regulations across countries and industries. It can help create a unified global effort to combat plastic pollution and promote a more sustainable approach to plastic use and waste management. Take a look at our website to see examples of some of our simple but effective strategies to help our clients limit polymer types and avoid problematic plastics. https://lnkd.in/dzvbv97 #sustainability #circulareconomy #plastics #impact #GlobalPlasticsTreaty

Did you just talk about burning fossil fuels and how we should go all electric? You are going BEV and lowering your “carbon footprint”. You are just an usual idiot. Let us all think of what should we do with this problem before we start to consume it. Carbon captured in plastic is the problem, not the one in the air.
MORE AND MORE PLASTIC The amount of plastic that is produced in the world every year has increased explosively in just a human lifetime. From 2 million tons in 1950 to over 440 million tons in 2022. These are the figures from the plastics industry itself, but they do not include synthetic fibres so the real production is a lot higher. More than half the total amount of plastic produced was only brought to market after 2000. The expectation is that the production will have quadrupled (compared to 2019) to about 1480 million tons by 2050. This is almost thrice the total weight of the world’s population today! So while people are cleaning up, at the same time we are producing more and more plastic. We need to stop plastic pollution at it's source. Before it's to late. Our fourth deep-dive into the ‘Towards Ending Plastic Pollution by 2040’ report focuses on the policy interventions covered by: 🚮 Pillar D: Ensure the controlled disposal of waste that cannot be prevented or safely recycled Not all plastics are created equal. Some intricate designs challenge recycling efforts, while others may not be sorted efficiently for recycling. Here, controlled disposal becomes a last-resort option to prevent plastic waste from being mismanaged. Key Insights from Pillar D: 🔹 Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and others could see a 46% drop in controlled disposal by 2040 vs 2019. 🔹 Regions currently lacking waste management infrastructure could see a 74% increase in controlled disposal via landfills or incineration. Pillar D covers three key policy interventions: 1. 🚫 Restrictions on plastic waste trade that go beyond the Basel Convention: Limit the export of plastic waste to regions ill-equipped to manage it. This safeguards regions from shouldering responsibility they aren’t equipped for. 2. 🌍 Global standards on controlled disposal to ensure environmentally sound practices when landfilling or incineration becomes the last resort to prevent mismanagement of plastics. 3. 🏖 Removal programmes for legacy plastic: While the focus is strongly on prevention of mismanaged plastics, removal programmes for legacy plastics such as beach clean-ups still have a role to play in awareness raising and data collection for informed policies. Explore these policies in more detail at https://lnkd.in/ejBysC_i #plasticstreaty #endplasticpollution #circulareconomy
