I've just started reading "Articulating Design Decisions" by Tom Greever. It's been recommended to me a few times, for being an insightful guide that underscores an essential truth: how you communicate about your designs can often be as critical (if not more so) as the designs themselves. I'm particularly excited to level up in these areas: 🖼 Enhancing how I present my work in interviews and in my portfolio. 🚀 Taking more initiative and leading design conversations. 🎓 Sharing knowledge with team members, ensuring everyone's onboard with the UX vision. 🤝 Collaborating seamlessly with cross-functional teams. 💪 Advocating for my designs and research with clarity, conviction, and context.

The more I grow as a product designer, the more I realize that good UX isn't about pushing pixels, managing projects, or even doing quality user research. It's about leading and collaborating with other people. If you can do that well, you're going to have success! There's a trick to that though... A magic trick; a systematic wait to cast vision, align, and collaborate successfully! Experience Director/UX Consultant: Designer + Researcher + Educator // Former Razorfish & Publicis Sapient
Expanding on my post from the other day, here are some thoughts from me on cultivating a design culture at work over at UX Collective. I'm sure I missed some great best practices, so let's make this collaborative. Would love to see you thoughts in the comments over there. Shout outs in the piece to Rachel Lovinger and Jesse Nover, but I also to all of my former managers (Kyle Outlaw!), who encouraged me to contribute to and lead in nurturing an inspiring and empowering design culture. When assigning designers to a project team, an important consideration to take into account is whether they are more "menders" or "makers." The terms were originally coined by sociologist David Stark and refer to two different mindsets when it comes to problem-solving, innovation, and creating value. 🔨 Menders are those who enjoy taking something that is already built and improving its quality. They love to fix bugs and hone in on small deficiencies in order to make them better. Designers who fall into this category are great to have on a project that is already established and may be overwhelmed by the messy and sometimes uncertain discovery phase of a project. 🖌️ Makers on the other hand love to think big and create new products and systems from scratch. They are out-of-the-box thinkers, great at bringing fresh perspectives to a problem. Uncertainty doesn't bother them, but they may feel constrained to work within the boundaries of an existing product or solution. 💡 It's important to note that the concept is more of a spectrum - not everyone will be on one extreme or the other, and many designers will be somewhere in between. However, both menders and makers are necessary for the full lifecycle of a product, so consider which stage things are at and assign your talent accordingly. ------------ At Dura Digital, our Human-Centered Design team is stacked with both menders and makers. Contact us today if you need a specific skill set for your next project. https://lnkd.in/gTJTKaWK #UXWW #UserExperience #UX #Menders #Makers

Two months ago, I took the first step into the world of product design. I am both excited and humbled by the immense possibilities that lie ahead. The path has been filled with challenges, learning opportunities, and the chance to bring creative visions to life. While I am still a newbie in the field, every moment of this journey has been an exhilarating experience. Coming from a background in Supply Chain, Customer Service and Operations, I am no stranger to the importance of problem-solving and user-centric solutions. However, transitioning to product design has opened up a whole new realm of exploration for me. The fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and human-centred design has captivated my interest, and I'm eager to dive deeper into mastering the art of crafting seamless user experiences. One of the first lessons I've learned on this journey is the significance of empathy. Designing with the user in mind requires a deep understanding of their needs, pain points, and aspirations. Through user research, I've gained insights that challenge my assumptions and push me to think beyond the surface level. It's been an eye-opening experience to realize how even the tiniest design choices can impact someone's interaction with a product. The support and camaraderie within the design community have been invaluable. Learning from seasoned designers about their journeys, tips, and advice has helped me navigate the initial hurdles of this exciting path. A big thank you to Sixtus Cyprian Onyekwere for reaching out and connecting me with an amazing opportunity where I can improve on my learning and design skills. Undoubtedly, there's a long road ahead, and I anticipate moments of frustration and triumph. Every obstacle conquered is a step closer to honing my skills and contributing meaningfully to the world of product design. #productdesign #learningjourney #tech #uiuxdesign #upskilling #change

✨ Our Head of Product design is the amazing Natalie Joll. Nat has a great passion for User Experience Design and enjoys learning about people, their journeys, and ideating on solutions to help improve experiences, not just for the customers, but also the designers and developers she collaborates with. ⭐ Nat, what is your role at Nomos One? - I'm the Head of Product Design at Nomos One. As part of this I have the pleasure of leading our design team, which includes the wonderful Tanya, as well as helping guide the experience vision for our product. On an average day you can see me doing anything from working with one of the trios on an initiative, to design reviews, to working through how we will measure the success of our experiences. ⭐ What do you enjoy most about working at Nomos One? - I'm really grateful for the people I work with, both within my and the wider product team, but also people in the wider organisation. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't genuinely care and take time to send a message if they feel something is off. Couple that with the awesome fact that we have the flexibility to work remote or from co-working spaces, and that we hold each other accountable for actually taking sick leave! I also enjoy the design challenges that come from working on such a niche area and the ability to grow the design team practice at Nomos from where it started to where we want to get to. ⭐ What is a book you can read over and over again? - For me this would be a series as opposed to a book. I really love The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I'm very much a fantasy fan, and I find these a combination of easy to read, well written and great story! ⭐ If you could learn a new skill by tomorrow, what would you like to learn? - I would really love to learn another language. I think it's a really good thing to be able to really be part of another culture, not just your own, and can open your mind to other perspectives as well. ⭐ If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? - I have had this discussion before and I'm not sure if I would actually be able to hack it but I'm going to go with lasagne. There's nothing like lasagne with a side salad to make the day better. #NomosOne #MeetOurTeam #BehindTheBrand #TeamSpotlight #PeopleandCulture #productdesign #uxexperience #ui #uxdesign #productdevelopment #saas

Exciting Times Ahead! As we continue to expand our Design Organization, I'm thrilled to witness the growth and opportunities that lie ahead. But just like in life, our journey in design is full of highs and lows, and it's perfectly okay to acknowledge that. As UX designers, it's crucial to remember that we're all on unique paths, each with its own set of challenges and victories. It's like embarking on different routes up a mountain, but the view from the top is equally breathtaking for all of us. The importance of team thinking during this transformative phase is crucial. In a way, we're like a team climbing that mountain together. Just as underlying issues like anxiety or depression can hinder happiness in personal life, similar feelings can arise in our professional journey. But let's shift our focus away from comparing ourselves and instead, celebrate the successes of our colleagues. Their achievements are inspirational milestones on our collective journey. Team members, like climbers on a rope, support each other as they ascend. We should aim to embody different levels of team thinking: from seeking validation in our actions to acting for the greater benefit of the team. This journey teaches us resilience, new skills, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. Remember, our individual accomplishments shine brighter when we work together, uplifting one another. So, let's keep our minds open, communicate more effectively, and continue to grow both professionally and personally. As we step out of our comfort zones, we open ourselves up to a world of new opportunities. Let's embrace the challenges, cherish the victories, and think as a united team. Let's propel our Design Organization to new heights of success! #UXDesign #TeamWork #EmbraceOpportunities
