Last Sunday I raced Copenhagen Half Marathon—and one day before, I publicly stated my goal to run it under 70 min. I promised to share results, so here they are: I achieved my wildest dreams--in part, by following this playbook: 1️⃣ STRETCH GOALS Goals focus attention, but they can also cap outcomes. I ran the best race of my life because I set two good stretch goals: 1) run sub-69 min; 2) finish top 100. Sure enough, I ran a 1:08:54 watch time* & finished 94th** 2️⃣ RACE PLANNING   Without proper planning, stretch goals can kill a main goal. To avoid this trap, I gave myself a buffered range of times to hit throughout the race. One side of the range was my “cautious” stretch goal (sub-69); the other was my main goal + a buffer (1:09:30). For 5k & 10k, I gave myself “no faster than” & “no slower than” times: 5k MUST BE between 16:19-16:30; 10k MUST BE between 32:38-33:00. Too fast & too slow were equally bad. Sure enough, I split 16:22 & 32:59. Only after 10k did I give myself permission to chase my bigger stretch target** 3️⃣ COMPETITIVE MINDSET   Competition improves outcomes. Thankfully, CPH Half is one of the most competitive races in the world (WR was set there in '19). As you can see in this photo, I was able to race all the way until the finish line (and beat that guy! 😉). I've noticed that I'm either in a "winner" mindset, or I'm not--and this race, I managed to keep that mindset to the end. However, super warm temperatures slowed everyone down this year—which worked out great for my goals 😎

🚵♀️🏆🌲 This Sunday, I competed in my first-ever official downhill mountain bike race competition in Alkornoke Bike Park, and it was quite an experience! 🙌 Despite coming in second to last and being beaten by almost 70 other competitors, I'm proud of myself for pushing through. 🤘 But why on earth am I sharing this? Well, it´s because I´m trying to learn it's not just about the outcome, but the entire journey, despite my normal competitiveness in sporting situations. Although this wasn´t my first time visiting the bike park it was quite a new experience in many ways. Previously when I visited this park it was for womens days, but this time there were only 5 female competitors. I also continued to challenge myself by speaking Spanish with the majority of the participants. 🇪🇸 I even tried some new things, like cooking a meal in my slow cooker whilst staying overnight in a hotel. 🍴🏨 Success isn't just about the result, but the individual pieces that come together to make it happen. It's a bit like teaching - like a jigsaw puzzle of variables that you have to put all the pieces together first before any learning can happen. 🧩 Even though I may have "failed" on paper, I've improved as a downhill mountain biker and managed to shave off 20 seconds from my previous attempt on the same course back in 2023. 🙌 My time was 2mins 35 seconds (vs the winner who got 1min 35). Comparing yourself to others rarely works (especially when you´re competing against men in their prime fitness). Plus, I finished the race without any major injuries, as two others had hospital visits. 2024: The year women are allowed to compete in the Red Bull Rampage... Following my post a few days ago recognising surfer Vahine Fierro’s historic win at the 2024 Tahiti Pro, an event women were not allowed to compete in until 2021. Red Bull have just announced that this year, 2024, will be the first time women will compete in the Rampage, one of the most challenging and prestigious events in free ride mountain biking. For years, Red Bull Rampage has been a men-only event. Now, with the introduction of a women’s category, female athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their incredible skills and bravery on the same massive and technical courses that have defined Rampage for over two decades. This announcement comes with mixed feelings. Clearly, it's incredible to hear that women now have the platform to compete in one of the world most technical mountain biking events. However, it comes with frustration that it's 2024 when this is happening. Outdoor activities – Together for health and team spirit Whether running, cycling or fitness - with spring just around the corner, now is the ideal time to get outside and get active. For example, going for a run together or signing up for the company run, playing soccer in the park, or taking a bike ride around the neighborhood. 🌟Connecting, communicating and building towards a European Women's MTB network🌟 Held in the picturesque Vienna Woods, this year's IMBA Europe Summit saw an incredible turnout of women in mountain biking—a significant milestone for our organization dedicated to promoting more people on bikes through sustainable mountain biking. This year's program included a dedicated breakout session on the FIAS (Fostering Inclusive Action Sports) framework, as well as a working group session that focused on the development of a European women’s mountain biking network. The FIAS workshop provided crucial insights into fostering gender inclusivity in mountain biking. Led by Dr. Fiona Spotswood, the session highlighted four key areas: building communities of women+ in MTB, integrating women+ into MTB culture, supporting women+ in leadership roles, and transforming MTB's cultural representation. Attendees engaged in dynamic discussions on how to enhance inclusivity individually and collectively, committing to actionable steps across these areas to drive meaningful change. Simultaneously, the women in mountain biking workshop underscored persistent challenges such as unequal pay, limited representation, and stereotypes. Participants articulated a vision for a more diverse and welcoming MTB environment, emphasizing the need for increased visibility, equitable opportunities, and community-building initiatives to empower women within the sport. These workshops collectively set the stage for ongoing efforts to advance gender equity and inclusivity in mountain biking communities across Europe and beyond.
