We recently attended the Central Asia Plastics Trade fair in Kazakhstan, a market brimming with potential. Our colleague, Sofija Bertasa, sheds light on the region's prospects: "The launch of local raw material production has led to a remarkable surge in polymer processing. With the recent introduction of local polypropylene production in Kazakhstan, we expect the plastic processing sector to experience substantial growth in the next 3-5 years." Although the current focus primarily revolves around industrial packaging, particularly Stretch Hood solutions, there is a growing interest in food packaging. Specifically, PET trays for meat made from bottle flakes have garnered significant attention. For businesses venturing into these emerging markets, prioritizing productivity, reliability, and knowledge transfer for production setup is paramount. #CentralAsiaPlasticsTradeFair #PolymerProcessing #IndustrialPackaging #StretchHoodSolutions #FoodPackaging #PETTrays #BottleFlakes #EmergingMarkets

Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most abundant plastics used due to its low price, moldability, temperature and chemical resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties. Consequently, waste from plastic materials is anticipated to rapidly increase with continually increasing demand. When addressing the global problem of solid waste generation, post-consumer recycled materials are encouraged for use in new consumer and industrial products. As a result, the demand is projected to grow in the next several years. In this study, material recovery facility (MRF)-recovered post-consumer PP was utilized to determine its suitability for extrusion blow molded bottle food packaging. https://lnkd.in/eCeMEKdQ

In many ways, the US rPET market is deviating from historic patterns heading into this year’s Plastics Recycling Conference. Want to talk about it? Let’s connect at the show! ⭐️West Coast players squeezed (⬆️ rising bale costs due to export buyers, ⬇️ low flake and pellet sell prices due to imported rPET) ⭐️East Coast market subdued (amid what is historically peak pricing) https://lnkd.in/gh3fWfVY

As the interconnection of global markets intensifies, many regions beyond the US are showing interest in the domestic recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) market. They are considering it both as a potential source of feedstock supply and as a destination for finished flake and pellet cargoes. #ICIS #R-PET #recycledpolyethyleneterephthalate #Recycling #plastics #chemicals #chems

Senior Editor, Recycling, ICIS | Shaping the world by connecting markets to optimise global resources My pronouns are he/him
Just in case you missed my previous post, we're very proud at ICIS to have conducted our State of Play 2024 Study for the PET (and R-PET!) market in Europe. Follow the link to download the report to find out all you want to know about Europe's PET and R-PET market, including one of my favourite questions - is there enough food-grade R-PET in Europe to meet the Single Use Plastic Directive's 25% target by January next year??? #recycling #recycledplastics #PET #plasticpackaging #circulareconomy

Director of Sustainability Consulting & Asia Strategy Advisor at ICIS | Shaping the world by connecting markets to optimise global resources
Following our successful collaboration on Flexible films State of Play in Europe with Plastics Recyclers Europe, we continue on our mission to provide more transparency to the recycling markets and are pleased to launch next State of Play report offering a detailed examination of the #PET market in Europe in 2022. The study, conducted in collaboration with industry leaders and organisations, provides valuable data, trends, and future scenarios for the PET market, including insights into challenges and opportunities within the supply chain. Key highlights of the State of Play 2024 study include: · PET collection rate in 2022 increased to 60%, from the total of 5 million tonnes of PET resin utilised in the region. · European #extrusion capacity for rPET pellet production doubled to 1.4 million tonnes in 2022. · Existing European #recycling capacity is deemed sufficient to meet short-term targets, with around 800,000 tonnes of #rPET required to meet the #SUPD mandatory recycled content #targets for #2025. Despite the positive progress, the study identifies regional disparities in collection and recycled content rates, emphasising the need for continued efforts in improving sorting infrastructure and #harmonised waste collection to achieve long-term self-sufficiency in recycling PET. The collaborative endeavours of PET recycling participants have led to an improved recycling process and increased utilisation of rPET during 2022. Strategies such as Design for Recycle (DfR), Deposit-Return Systems (DRS), and the development of sorting technologies have contributed to the effectiveness of capturing PET packaging into the recycling stream Many thanks to our fantastic team at ICIS Helen McGeough Saumya Goel Cássia Oliveira de Lima Alexandra Tomczyk Carolina Perujo Holland Matt Tudball Mark Victory who conducted the study in conjunction with partners, including Plastics Recyclers Europe, Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), Petcore Europe, and UNESDA - Soft Drinks Europe. We hope you will find this report relevant and insightful. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any of us for any questions or clarifications you may have.

Plastic packaging accounts for more than 17% of petrochemical production worldwide, and most of these items are unfortunately discarded after just one use. Fortunately, we can reduce new plastic packaging flows to support emissions cuts while improving quality of life. I'm proud of my team for launching a new RMI report, “We Can Cut Petrochemicals Use Today: Plastic Packaging". It provides detailed technical analyses on where emissions can be cut or reduced from specific packaging supply chains. These insights give industry leaders and decision-makers the guidance they need to reduce emissions with their purchasing and market-shaping power. Reducing emissions from #plastic packaging is within reach. Read the full report below: (https://lnkd.in/eEYu5nEd)
