Happy Friday, all! Today I setup file path aliases for the #reactnative project I'm working on. Aliases can simplify the require/import paths in your project. Instead of importing something using a complex relative path like "../../../assets/my-image.png", you can use a simpler path like "~Assets/my-image.png". This has been especially nice in a larger, more structured project where components and screens are stored in their own designated folders. I achieved this by using the #babel plugin, babel-module-resolver. I specified the root directory, defined the desired aliases, and listed the file extensions that required handling in my babel config file. After that, I updated all of the complicated import paths to use the alias. Which was a lot, like 140 files 😮 VSCode's replace all instances tool saved the day for me there. That's all from me. I'm back to working in #reactnative today (and for the foreseeable future 🎉 ). I've gotten Cookeri to a place I'm happy with, so I plan to leave it alone for now. It's time for something new! Today I set up a page that allows users to manage their notification settings. Currently, we've only got one setting, but the app has a few types of notifications that users will be able to opt out of. Basically, I just setup an on-and-off switch that toggles a boolean value. True means the user will see the notification, false means they won't, etc. I made use of #asyncstorage to store the value, so that it will persist while the app is downloaded. A fun #HTML #CSS thing I learned today: if you want to add style to some text that's part of a paragraph element, you can simply wrap the section of text with a `<span>` element and add a classname to it. It's an easy way to make certain letters, words, or sentences pop out from the rest of the text. I added it to my portfolio site today to highlight the tech I'm experienced with. I'm sure this isn't new to a lot of people, but I thought it was cool and I'm sad I hadn't learned about it before! Why does this work? Simply because a 'span' is an inline-level element, which means it participates in the inline layout as opposed to the block layout, where elements like divs stack like blocks. Bonus: Another way you can apply style to individual bits of text is by using the `<mark>` element, but its use case is a little more specific. According to MDN, "The `<mark>` HTML element represents text that is marked or highlighted for reference or notation purposes due to the marked passage's relevance in the enclosing context." I started learning about unit testing today with #vitest! My goal is to add some tests to Cookeri, so my initial gut reaction was to add #jest to my project and just magically start writing tests. But as I did that, I realized that I really don't understand testing that much yet. So for now, I'm taking it slow and starting with the basics. I've already learned about the triple A pattern (Arrange, Act, Assert), which I'm using as my guide right now. Coding with Mosh has a nice unit testing with #javascript tutorial that I'm following along with. It's been fun. I already find myself, sort of, understanding what kind of tests I'd want to write in the first place. Looking forward to the journey! I wrapped up the email login option for Cookeri today using #typescript and #supabase. I opted for the one-time passcode approach, which I've always enjoyed using. Using this approach can: ⚡ remove the need to manage passwords ⚡ make it easier for users to sign up and use your app It definitely removed a headache for me. I really don't have any reason to store passwords with Cookeri anyway! The implementation was pretty straightforward since I'm using #supabase for my backend and authentication. I wrote a short blog post about it that I'll link to below if you want to see more! One thing I struggled with here was understanding how to use server code alongside client code in Next.js. Initially, I had the sign-in functions inside of my login page, but I also wanted to use React state to control the form as well as track when the verification code was sent, so I could conditionally render the input for the code. Luckily, this was as simple as moving those functions into their own separate file. Some next steps from here will be setting up a custom SMTP provider for sending the emails, since Supabase has a rate limit! Happy Friday, all. I’m excited to share that the Cookeri home page and login page are up and running! Go check them out! You can even login and use Cookeri if you want, though it's not totally working perfectly yet 😅   Building out a home page is, surprisingly, unintuitive. I’ve seen a million home pages, but that never quite solidified what should appear on a home page for me. https://saaspages.xyz/ Was a great resource for that. It gives you a list of best practices for various pages on a SaaS website, as well as a large list of real examples. Once again, don’t reinvent the wheel (unless you want to!). Use what already works! By using this site, I was able to design my home page in a day, in what would have more likely been a week otherwise.   I found this site from Brad Traversy's design resources for developers repo on Github, which is an incredible resource. I'm back to making progress on Cookeri. It's been difficult to get some meaningful work done on it as of late. It's easy to lose focus and slowly tinker with personal projects, which isn't always a bad thing. But I've been wanting to wrap up this project for a minute now. I took some time last week to write up some tickets and define what 'done' means, and that has helped a ton. My goal is to have this thing ready to go within a week or two! Some of the work I've done this past week: ☑ Wrapped up the database and API work for now ☑ Finished up the design in Figma ☑ Re-designed some sections I wasn't a fan of ☑ Implemented the redesign to the editor ☑ Started implementing the splash page design Designing the app has been fun. I've finally settled on something I'm happy with. As a developer, I've learned to keep things as simple as possible and reference what already works. Designing from scratch is hard, especially if you're not a designer! I reach for the html.to.design plugin a lot, which lets me pull already well-made sites into Figma and use them as a base. From there, I adapt the design to my app and make it my own. I'd love to hear how others go about designing their personal projects. I had a pretty crushing rejection today. As I enter month six of my job search, I had hoped that I'd be able to take rejections in stride by now, but yeah, it's not getting easier to be told "no" or that there is someone slightly better than you. It really knocked me down, and my confidence is definitely shaken from it. Mostly, I'm feeling lost. Lost on how to manage the endless amount of things you have to do, prove that you can do the job. Its overwhelming to say the least and Its getting difficult to keep up with it all. All this to say, of course i'm not giving up. I acknowledge that I've grown a lot these past six months. I've met many amazing folks, learned so many new things. Learned so much about myself. And I've been given a lot of help from some great people too and I'm incredibly thankful for that.
