HAPPY EARTH DAY Whilst writing the words ‘Happy Earth Day’, a million questions ran through my mind: why do we need an ‘Earth Day’, why are we still behaving so badly toward the planet, why do we continue to waste so much, why are we still holding so many meetings and events to tell everyone what they already know? Over the past fourteen years since I turned my attention to the benefits of sustainable interiors and creative reuse, there has been an enormous shift but that shift is nowhere near agile, informed, widespread or substantial enough to effect the changes needed. So we have to keep talking, cajoling, inspiring and educating because if we don’t, we are leaving our descendants with an appalling and unacceptable legacy. Stopping humanity’s environment footprint from becoming unsustainable is not just the responsibility of the few, it’s the responsibility of the many. So a big thank you to all the sustainability experts, the eco officers, scientists and environmentalists helping to reduce carbon emissions, to the designers who champion reuse and innovative practices and products that provide the greenest options and to the person who is trying their best to waste less resources and recycle where they can. Thank you to everyone who chooses vintage over new, who doesn’t purchase new plastic items, who buys local and nationally-made products and has reduced their plane travel. Thank you to organisations and individuals who help us understand how our actions are impacting on the environment and for teaching us how we can live better. And a big and very special thank you to House of Upcycling members who are part of a unique community that not only champions individuality and style, but sustainability and wellbeing. Our professional artisanal movement has saved thousands of pieces of furniture from being sent to landfill, reusing a wide variety of materials and products along the way and taught enormous numbers of people how to upcycle items for themselves. By taking what we waste and turning it into what we want, our pro upcyclers have not only created a wealth of incredible products, they’ve created an exclusive 21st century Arts & Crafts movement with planet protection at its core. Kinnarps Sweden's classic "Valv"-chair is no longer in production (or at least no longer for sale on their website), and is one of those pieces of furniture that most people don't see any possibilities in upcycling. Thousands upon thousands of them get sent to incineration instead of being creatively reused - departments within Mölndals stad are as responsible for this wasteful behaviour as any other municipality, government organization or business. If you've lived in Sweden in the past 40 years, you're bound to have seen these in waiting rooms, conference rooms, offices, schools and auditoriums. They're pretty descent actually; comfortable, stackable, durable and sturdy. Good, utilitarian design - which has long fallen out of the realms of trendy design. Until some of us recreators decided to make something cool and modern out of them that is! (As this current school project evolves, I'll show you more shots of what we chose to do with them.) Yesterday, I had the privilege of sharing our Spacebar Design journey at WasteMINZ’s event…The response? Overwhelming. The number of connections and inquiries afterward is nothing short of incredible. 🤯It’s crazy to think just a few years back, it felt like an uphill battle to get anyone to spare a few minutes for sustainable and circular interior furniture solutions let alone attending a full presentation. 🏃♀️Fast forward to today, and the landscape has transformed. Sustainability and circularity is not just a buzzword; it's a conversation everywhere. We're only scratching the surface of what's possible, and the momentum is exhilarating. We used to feel like we are in this alone but along the way we got to connect with incredible individuals and teams like Rui Peng from Critical , Jeff Vollebregt from ImpacTex NZ , and Paul Charteris from saveBOARD.. This is more than just networking—it's building a community. Each person / team plays a crucial role, bringing our industry closer to a sustainable future. Their stories deserve to be told, and we're excited to be a part of a incredible movement and help celebrate each of their unique stories through our mahi. 😓The path hasn't been easy, and we're far from the top but we are starting to get some pretty good views. ⛰️The journey, especially when shared with like-minded individuals, is worth every effort. Today is World Environment Day, a day that encourages action to protect the environment and awareness of the global challenges we face. Alongside our clients, we try to produce work that enhances the world around us. We are dedicated to ensuring the longevity of our stands wherever possible, and always source our materials responsibly. No stand has embraced this ethos quite like our award-winning Google Earth stand. First rolled out in 2019, our design showcased the conscious approach Google was taking with its event offering. In an article published at the time Dusty Reid, the Marketing Event Program Manager for Google Earth, said: “We want to upcycle materials and use them in new and unique ways, because we don’t want to build booths that end up in the trash after just a few days.” And that's exactly what happened. Our original Google Earth stand has been exhibited nine times in the past five years. And this year it took its place at EGU Vienna 2024. The rustic aesthetic of our stand makes it pop in any setting and recycling continues to be a key element of the structure. Bike tyres have been transformed into plant hangers, melted plastic has been used to create multicoloured sheets for decoration, and wooden crates have been used for the framework. We have even incorporated materials from a demolished theatre. And when #EGU Vienna was over, the stand went back into storage, waiting patiently for its next chance to show just how sustainable design really works. #worldenvironmentday24 #sustainability #events
