Huge shoutout to Leighann, our Community Fundraiser, for organising the event and for leading a great ‘Knowledge Hub’ session on the topic at our recent team meeting! 👏 Football is close to our hearts, but it's essential to address concerns around dementia among players. Recent research from the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport sheds light on the immediate impact of football heading on brain function and communication with muscles. The study found that participants who headed real footballs experienced impaired cognitive function, emphasising the need for further exploration into the long-term effects on brain health. While the risks associated with repetitive heading are concerning, increased research funding shows promising steps toward player safety. At our Bannockburn Peer Support+ sessions held at Bannockburn and Eastern Villages Community Hub, we're all about supporting those with a passion for sports, including football. For the last 12 months I have had the honour of being on the Board of BDSRA. 3 weeks tomorrow, all of the hard work of the past few months will be coming to its conclusion as I head to the start line of the AJ Bell #GreatNorthRun in Newcastle. I've never run a half marathon before, but I've been working on my endurance for the past few months - all that pain will hopefully see me over the line! Every two hours... When I started as Back Up's CEO in February 2020 I learnt that every year in the UK 2,500 people sustain life changing #spinalcordinjury. Back Up and other charities have been developing our services and writing funding applications on this basis but something didn't feel right...year on year we have seen significant growth in the numbers of people coming to Back Up for support. The 2,500 figure didn't seem to reflect the reality on the ground. Two months ago Back Up brought a coalition of spinal cord injury charities together with colleagues from NHS England NHS Wales and NHS Scotland to review the latest data. Using figures from the NHS' own database we found that more than 4,400 people in the UK sustained a spinal cord injury in 2023/24..that's one person every two hours. The coalition estimates that there are over 105,000 people living with spinal cord injury in the UK. These new figures are being shared today on Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day. #sciad24 They show just how many people are impacted. Of course it's not just the person who sustains an injury or illness who are impacted but their loved ones too. There's no getting away from the fact that a spinal cord injury is life-changing. But it shouldn’t prevent you from getting the most out of life. If you or anyone you know is affected by spinal cord injury please know that you are not alone, support is available.
