"   The research cites attempts to dive into the reality of consumer perceptions regarding our 'privacy preserving' actions."   Spoiler: consumers aren't buying it either!!   ❓ What’s what: A study at the Federal Trade Commission Privacy Con explored consumer perceptions of #onlineadvertising #privacy. Led by Klaus Miller, it surveyed ~1700 US consumers, analyzing both intrinsic and instrumental privacy aspects. https://lnkd.in/e7B8i4dg   ❗ Why it matters: Results: While PETs like the Google Privacy Sandbox offer technical improvements, they do not necessarily enhance consumer perceptions of privacy. Behavioral targeting was found to significantly violate consumers' intrinsic privacy preferences, while contextual targeting viewed more favorably.   ↔ Between the lines: Despite efforts to enhance privacy through PETs consumer perceptions of privacy violations remain largely unchanged. While keeping data on the consumer's device improves perceptions, the method of targeting—whether at the individual or group level—it does not significantly impact perceived privacy violations.   🔍 Zooming out: This underscores the need for a consumer-centric approach to online privacy. The industry needs to prioritize consumer perceptions and educate them about privacy practices to align technical solutions with consumer expectations.
