Does the you of today hate the you of tomorrow? I don't think the answer is yes! But I do think it's a worthwhile question to ask, given that many times it might seem like we treat our future selves in less than friendly ways. I'm a big fan of The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos - Laurie always covers cutting edge social science topics and figures out how to make the findings approachable and practical - so I was delighted when she had me on the show to talk about the ways we can improve well-being now AND later, and determine how we might treat our future selves with more kindness. But our conversation took a fun turn: we focused on how we can treat our current selves in friendlier ways that could also lead to more happiness and well-being later. It was a perspective that was more "and" than "or." As Laurie put it: "in reality, present and future you often have more shared goals than we might realize." Laurie also got to have a sneak preview of the "Future You" AI tool I've been working on in collaboration with MIT Media Lab members Pat Pataranutaporn, Peggy Yin, Pattie Maes and Kavin Winson (stay tuned for more about this soon!). Laurie Santos's experience mimicked mine: she had not only had more compassion *for* her future self, but also experienced a greater sense of compassion *from* her future self. Awesome question. This is what I think about every time I'm sitting on a domestic red eye about to depart. Did past me hate now me?

Very interesting question that makes you think on a deeper level.
