In the past month, I've experienced a whirlwind of dynamic moments. Throughout these incredible experiences, I strived to be fully present, absorbing the energy, and forging connections.   But in a rare quiet moment this past weekend, I had a chance to reflect, and my mind kept wandering to the questions: “What have I learned?” and “How does all this propel us forward?”   And while deep in thought, I was inspired to write a letter because I can’t answer these questions alone. It will take a community and a bright future. But what I can provide are my learnings below.    To the next generation of employees,   I've had the privilege to participate in some amazing events recently that fill me with pride for our progress. And while watching these moments in real-time has been incredible, there's still work to be done. Change won’t happen overnight and whether you read this today or 10 years from today, I want to share learnings from this moment in time that will help you continue to shape our world and make a lasting impact: • Change requires intentionality: As we embraced our new brand at J&J Day, remember change is where we discover the extraordinary, and in your careers, you might have the chance to make history. If that moment comes, seize it with courage and empathy, knowing that the impact can last for generations. • Inclusion is a business essential: No matter where your journey takes you, diversity, equity, and inclusion will be a strategic necessity for success. At J&J’s 2023 DEI Summit, we celebrated the power of inclusion and belonging to help us rise above divisions and unite us. These are not just "nice to have" elements of corporate culture; they are integral to achieving long-term success. Ultimately, your career will be defined by the impact you leave behind. Embrace the diversity of thought, background, and experiences within your company. • Always engage at all levels: We have a responsibility to our patients to tackle racial healthcare disparities. To do this, we need to engage in discussions and work together. During the Congressional Black Caucus, we championed legislation, knowing it's a long-term effort that demands persistence to succeed. As you embark on your path, do not try to go at it alone. Community is key. On April 20th, we culminated our first annual DEI Day by announcing the Intentionally Inclusive Challenge, an initiative to drive actionable, meaningful change around Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for our employees, customers, and communities. The Intentionally Inclusive Challenge, or "IIC" for short, rests on three pillars - learn, engage, inspire. These pillars frame how we hope to spur and view action around DEI. When we integrate the diverse perspectives, values, thoughts, and backgrounds that each of us contributes, society can evolve in a more inclusive direction. One of my post in a Diversity Equity and Inclusion group is sparking a valuable conversation, and I thought I’d shared here to open it up to the greater network. While the post is DEI specific, encourage my friends and #socialjustice, #labor, #socialimpact and the greater common good fields, to share their perspective. What’s your “why” for DEI? Often times as DEI professionals we are focused on meeting objectives, building community, landing the next project or initiative. DEI work is challenging. It takes passion, commitment and deep understanding of the space. This morning a former colleague and I were discussing innovative DEI strategies for our respective companies. Many of the ideas we were throwing out have already been done, sometimes wonderfully and sometimes deprecated. We inevitably hit a wall. In that moment it was helpful to pause the strategy development, and spend some time talking about why this work resonates with us. Sharing your passion and “why” with others can inspire our collective creative and innovative minds. I invite you to share your “why” in the comments. Why do you dedicate your time and skills to DEI? What drives you? What makes you wake up every day, especially on the toughest of days, and show up?

Sticking with the foundations of DEI, this week we're talking about an area that is still overlooked in a lot of the work we're doing. I appreciate it can be difficult to try to cover everything, but if you're looking to have a DEI restart in 2024, this could be the perfect time to review how well your approach caters for the breadth of generations in the talent pool. Women’s History Month is coming to a close but it's not over yet, and Citi Trends has more talented women to celebrate! This week we are shining a spotlight on Wendy, one of our Planners within the Allocation team. Wendy is a great team player and is always willing to step in and help where needed. We asked her a few questions about her career. Here is what she shared with us.   Q: What do you love most about your job? A: What I love most about my job is that I'm constantly learning and growing through the projects, processes, and people I work with and engage in. I get to collaborate with passionate people who have diverse perspectives, and the opportunity to expand my knowledge base. It's incredibly rewarding to build businesses with my team that serves local communities.   Q: What challenges have you faced in your career? A: One of the main challenges has been adapting to new technologies and evolving work environments. Keeping up with the latest trends and tools requires continuous learning and flexibility. Working in a fast-paced industry such as ours means that priorities can shift quickly, requiring me to stay agile and adaptable.  Despite these challenges, I've found that each one has presented an opportunity for growth and development.   Q: What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far? A: My most meaningful accomplishments so far have been helping others achieve their goals and succeed by providing support and guidance.   Q: What advice would you give someone who has just graduated from college and is starting their first job in their desired field? A: My advice would be to stay curious, be open to learning, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Take the time to understand company culture and seek out opportunities to grow and develop your skills. Build relationships with your colleagues and mentors, as they can provide valuable insights and guidance.
