2023 was a year of both feast and famine for European private equity firms, writes Marie Kemplay at PitchBook. So will European PE have easier access to capital in 2024? The unlevered or low-levered parts of private equity are likely to have an easier story while rates stay high and financing conditions tight, believes Federated Hermes Limited's Elias Korosis (Corossis). Meanwhile, GP-led transactions, such as continuation vehicles, attracted significant attention in 2023 as a tool to generate liquidity for both LPs and GPs. Given the challenging exit environment, Sanjeev Phakey, said he expects GP-led secondaries to continue being a significant phenomenon but that successful GP-led processes will be those for the highest-quality assets, where the GP is able to demonstrate strong alignment with the continuation vehicle. Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, a leading private equity firm focused exclusively on the healthcare and technology industries, announced that it has completed fundraising for WCAS XIV, L.P. The Fund closed at over $5bn of total capital, above both its target and the Firm's prior fund, WCAS XIII, L.P., which closed at $4bn. The Firm said that WCAS XIV received strong support from new and long-time WCAS investors with a Limited Partner re-up rate of approximately 95% and the four largest investors in WCAS XIV increased their capital commitment by approximately 25% from WCAS XIII. Bluestarcapital™ PLC (AIM:BLU) shares started higher again on Wednesday, after the company raised sufficient funds to cover its capital needs through until September. It comes after Tuesday’s portfolio update which reported on key developments at a number of investee companies and encouraged investors. Today, Blue Star revealed it had raised £100,000 before expenses by placing 100 million new ordinary shares, priced at 0.1p each. The fundraise will bolster the company's working capital, supporting its ongoing operations and strategy until September 2024, the company said in a statement. This small raise aligns with the company's forecast monthly cash burn rate and its plans to dispose of its shareholding in SatoshiPay.
