Understanding the intricacies of sound transmission in mass timber construction is crucial for architects, engineers, and construction professionals. The overall sound transmission between rooms depends on multiple transmission paths: direct, indirect, and flanking transmission. In the flanking sound paths, vibrational energy is transmitted from one building element to another via their common junction. Mass timber construction, while offering unique architectural possibilities, also presents distinct challenges regarding sound transmission. The desire to maintain the aesthetic of exposed wood, coupled with the inherent lightness of this construction type, significantly amplifies the importance of flanking transmission paths. The vibration reduction index, Kij, can be calculated using ISO standards and expresses the attenuation of the vibrational power flow through a junction, playing a pivotal role in sound isolation. It can also be measured in both lab and in-situ and CDM Stravitec has noticed significant differences between the calculations based on the standards versus the measured Kij values. Moreover, while acoustical decoupling is necessary to avoid transmission over the flanking paths, it is vital to remember that the structural design of the connections must be guaranteed, and a balance between structural and acoustic requirements is necessary. Our angle brackets are subjected to mechanical tests to guarantee structural stability and reliability while providing the desired acoustic and vibration decoupling performance. Are you curious about the acoustical hurdles in mass timber construction and how flanking transmissions can be reduced? Swing by booth 995 of CDM Stravitec at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland on March 26-28. For a deeper understanding of the findings from our on-site test campaign, we invite you to access a copy of our white paper on this matter: https://lnkd.in/gBng6YVt Let's dive into the discussion together. #acoustics #soundinsulation #cdmstravitec #straviwood #clt #quietbuildings #noiseandvibration #comfort #acoustics #proudengineering #architecture #ThinkDifferent #IMTC2024 #InternationalMassTimberConference #CLTconstruction #modular #flanking

340 m² of glulam columns and beams, CLT floor slabs, lightweight timber façades, designed to show what the future of construction could look like: “Build-in-Wood Demonstrator” is the living laboratory to test the promises of the European Build-in-Wood project and of its 21 partners, including Rothoblaas. Is it true that a modular and technological building made of engineered timber offers exceptional performance in terms of durability, insulation, versatility and also sustainability? The answer, even if we think we already know it, will come from the data collected by the Demonstrator's "digital twin", which is equipped with sensors to monitor parameters such as moisture content. The system will enable predictive maintenance while generating data to evaluate the effects of technical changes on building performance. The motto "If we can test it, we can improve it" is one of the many reasons we are taking part in Build-in-Wood. Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/ebChKbFv

As part of Rambolls Design Excellence Board, I was recently asked how the facades of future buildings will look?! And do they act as seperator or integrator?! My answer to this was, that the look of Future Facades in most cases will look like they do today, as we aim to renovate rather than building new - but new or renovated future facades needs to act and perform dynamic in order to optimise human centric needs, energy performance requirements and lower the operational carbon. My assumption is that Dynamic Glass will be installed in 75 % of facades in the future, as this single product type has the abillity the meet excactly the needs for future facades. I have decided to give a free physical & online masterclass on Dynamic Glass, inviting presenters from the best of class companies as eLstar Dynamics, SageGlass HALIO, Inc. providing you with all the newest information - watch this short cliffhanger from a visit at BRIQ and Henning Larsen, showcasing eLstar Dynamics upcoming technology with performance exceeding expectations👌🏼 Please share your thoughts and/or message me if you wish to attend - and you are welcome share the invitation by @tagging your colleagues or sharing this post. I definitely recommend to also read recent article by my colleague Frederik Winther which highlights excactly why we need dynamic properties of future buildings https://lnkd.in/dn6hJksp Thanks to Anthony Slack, Steen Elsted Andersen, Espen Lunde Nielsen Jacob Vidkjær, Frederik Winther, Mandeep Singh, Axel Bluhme, Ferry Smits, Joachim Delventhal, Volkmar Offermann and many more for contributing to this interesting discussion #letsclosethegap #dynamicglass #futurefacades #architecture #engineering #glass #tech
