WWF & PreZero: Protecting Dugongs 🌊🌱 Last week we shared updates on projects in Vietnam and Thailand. This week, we're offering a glimpse into the "Dugong Protection Volunteer Group of Libong." 👨👩👦👦 The group, established as part of our project, has grown from ten to 24 members and recently held another training session in January 2023 focused on protecting dugongs and their ecosystems. 🔎 Off the coast of Koh Libong in Thailand, the #WWF is studying and closely monitoring the dugong population. Floating barriers in the rivers help reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the seagrass beds. Dugongs – those large, somewhat clumsy-looking grey giants – are shy sea cows native to the warm tropical waters of Southeast Asia. The increasing pollution of the ocean threatens their habitat: the seagrass beds. That is why it is so vital to sustainably reduce plastic waste in this delicate marine ecosystem. In proud partnership with WWF Deutschland we are happy to share our expertise in preventing plastic waste – and we're already witnessing great success 💚. YALI AKWA IBOM PARTNERS PASSION FM, CLEANS AND DECLUTTERS GUTTERS IN UYO Today, September 30, 2023, volunteers from Young African Leaders Initiative, Uyo, harvested 38.7kg of plastic waste and had it transmitted to immediate cash at the September Edition of our Environmental Clean Up Campaign in partnership with Passion FM. The impact of the harvested plastic waste will declutter the gutters which before now had blocked gutters within the Nsukara Offot area leading to massive gully erosion. The impact of the erosion is very deep caving into the foundation of many habitable houses on its way. While contributing our quota to mitigate this environmental disaster, we call on the Government and all relevant agencies to intervene in salvaging this community from this pending environmental disaster. As a community of passionate climate advocates, community shapers, and volunteers our roles transcend the confines of just raising young leaders but taking actions to protect and safeguard our environment. We hope you join us in these campaigns to protect our immediate communities and their environs. #YALIAkwaIbom #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalCleanup #cleanup #sustainablepolicy #climateaction

Deforestation is a critical risk for the future of coffee. At JDE Peet’s we are engaging with the coffee origin countries not only to comply with EUDR but most importantly to stop any further coffee related deforestation so that to contribute to ensure a future for coffee in an inclusive way that protects smallholder farmers and the industry.
We are excited that the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (De Vereniging van Beleggers voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (VBDO)) recognises our efforts in combating deforestation and preserving biodiversity as a good practice in its recent report on biodiversity and business! 🏆 At JDE Peet's, we are, from bean to cup, committed to making a positive impact on the planet and the communities we serve. Recognising nature’s vital role in coffee production, we intensively collaborate with partners and stakeholders to implement regenerative agriculture and responsible land-use practices. These initiatives not only improve soil quality and water management but also contribute to fighting climate change and uplifting the livelihoods of farmers, their families, and communities. But our commitment doesn't stop there! Engaged in restoration and reforestation projects in countries such as Honduras, Peru, and Indonesia, we address deforestation’s root causes, including poverty. In our unwavering pursuit to combat deforestation, we have set ambitious goals to establish a deforestation-free supply chain and to support coffee-producing nations in achieving deforestation-free sectors. Our inclusive strategy to combat deforestation involves utilising high-definition satellite imagery to map forests and coffee-growing areas accurately, assessing deforestation risks linked to coffee production, and implementing proactive measures to prevent or mitigate deforestation. We are proud that our efforts are recognised and hope sharing our approach can inspire other companies to act as well. Together we can drive positive change in the world! 🌍 For the full report, access the link here: https://lnkd.in/ejDUZj8s #JDEPeets #Sustainability #Deforestation #Biodiversity #Coffee #VBDO #MakingADifference #Honduras #Peru #Indonesia

👋🏼 Meet our friends at River Cleanup who strives to create impact for plastic-free rivers in Indonesia, and the region through professional, inclusive, positive, ethical, and impact-driven values. 🙍🏽♂️ Egar Anugerah is the Project Lead in Indonesia, and together with their global team, they hope to prevent plastic from reaching our oceans by cleaning rivers, changing behavior, and transforming organizations. 💪🏽 💡 Did you know? The presence of plastic in the environment can have grave consequences for ecosystems? Wildlife can become entangled in and immobilised by larger pieces, while smaller pieces may be mistaken as food by birds and aquatic animals like dolphins, turtles and fish. The result: severe health issues leading to the pain, suffering and often death of the affected animals. 🦸🏽♂️ Not all heroes wear capes! Shoutout to these guys for making a huge impact on our environment. To learn more on how you can help be part of the solution, check out River CleanUp 🌊🗑️ #Climate #Sustainability #Environment #SoutheastAsia

In the Philippines, the #Badjao are a seafaring people reliant on marine and coastal ecosystems for their livelihood and food. The ocean is integral to their daily life, history and culture. However, #plasticpollution contaminates their traditional fishing grounds and degrades wildlife habitats. Plastic debris obstructs fishing nets and traps, making it hard to catch enough fish for income and even just for subsistence. The impact on the Badjao’s ability to make a living has also become a factor in their migration to highly urbanized cities, where they are discriminated against, experience othering and end up living and working in unjust conditions. 🌍 #Happy_World_Environment_Day!🌍 Greetings Ghana🇬🇭! Today, we celebrate #World_Environment_Day, a global reminder of the importance of protecting and preserving #our_planet. As we reflect on this year's theme, let's take a moment to appreciate the incredible natural beauty and biodiversity that #Ghana is blessed with, from the lush forests of #Kakum_National_Park to the serene beaches of #Cape_Coast. In Ghana, we face unique environmental challenges such as #deforestation, #plastic_pollution, and the impacts of #climate_change. However, these challenges also present us with opportunities to #innovate and make a positive impact. Here are a few ways we can contribute to a healthier environment: 🌱 #Support_Reforestation_Efforts: Join local initiatives aimed at planting trees and restoring our forests. Every tree planted helps combat climate change and protects our biodiversity. ♻️ #Reduce_Plastic_Usage: Let's commit to using less plastic in our daily lives. Opt for reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Participate in community clean-up activities to keep our surroundings plastic-free. 🌿 #Promote_Sustainable_Agriculture: Support farmers who practice sustainable farming methods that protect the soil and reduce the need for harmful chemicals. This not only ensures food security but also preserves our natural resources. 💧 #Conserve_Water: Be mindful of our water consumption. Simple actions like fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, harvesting rainwater, and putting a stop to illegal mining activities can make a big difference. 👩🏫 #Educate_and_Advocate: Share knowledge about environmental conservation with your community. Advocate for practices that protect our environment in schools, workplaces, and homes. On this #World_Environment_Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to making a positive environmental impact. Together, we can ensure a #greener, #cleaner, and more #sustainable future for #Ghana🇬🇭 and the #world. #WorldEnvironmentDay #GreenGhana #SustainableFuture #ProtectOurPlanet #I_Am_An_Advocate

We've removed over 10,000 cheeseburgers of CARBON!🍔🍔🍔 At Proverb, we are partnered with Earthly, which is a platform created to give businesses an effective way to invest in nature: by working out how much carbon the individual business creates yearly and then offsetting this carbon through donations to a project that helps to fight climate change. 🌎 We are offsetting our carbon footprint to help protect the carbon-rich peatland forest of Rimba Raya which would have been turned into a palm oil estate emitting over 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. 📈 We are very proud to be supporting this initiative, we believe that it’s our job as businesses to be helping support the planet for future generations. Earthly has calculated our Business Emissions Report: Proverb is now a Climate positive business, going beyond carbon neutral, by offsetting 110% of our carbon emissions. 🌴 The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve project is protecting one of the most highly endangered ecosystems in the world. Without this project, the carbon-rich, peatland forest of Rimba Raya would have been turned into palm oil estates, emitting over 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. Instead, the project is protecting the land and working with local communities to achieve all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals. #carbonpositive #carbonremoval #carbonfootprint

Commodities linked to deforestation have destroyed the natural homes of vulnerable species like Orangutans for decades and it must stop. At WWF, we believe that we can make a difference by choosing products that use sustainable palm oil. Certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) is produced in a way that doesn't harm the environment or wildlife, and supports local communities. Stay tuned for more educational videos like this: https://lnkd.in/gZdxqNRd Just in case you didn't know: Orangutans are one of the four great apes, native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, are the world's largest tree-climbing mammals. They are mostly found in lowland areas and prefer forests in river valleys or floodplains. The three species of orangutan – the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli – differ a little in appearance and behaviour. The name orangutan means 'person of the forest' in the Malay language, and they are famously known as the gardeners of the forest.

One of the things I will never stop doing is protecting our climate and encouraging others to do the same. On Saturday, the 25th of November, I took a step forward in this resolve, as a member and representative of @ecosmartclub and went out with Planet Keepers in collaboration with @hardamsrecycling for the "Kickout Plastic Pollution in Ibadan" Walk. We gathered together at the Challenge Bus Terminal, Ibadan, and from there we went picking bottles and also sensitizing people on climate change and mitigation activities, such as the use of electronics, proper waste disposal, etc. especially in line with the theme of the walk, we explained to members of the community what should be done with used bottles, we also explained the terms "reuse and recycle", speaking in Yoruba, Pidgin or English as the case warranted. I believe we made so much impact. Some people were eager to put our explanation to use, some people stated that they would only make the right living choices if they were paid. While some who lived close to the road went home to bring the bottles they'd stored, some sold bottles to @hardamsrecycling, while some got their contact information for future purposes. These things couldn't but make me remember one of Jesus' Parables, the Parable of the Sower. The sower went out planting seeds, some fell on the path, some fell on the rock and some fell on good soil. The harvest of the seeds was determined by where they fell. In life, seeds planted in different sectors will not always land on good soil. However, you can determine what will happen to every seed if you are tenacious and resilient, though some will remain difficult. A rock can become a good soil once it is broken down and nutrient is added. Have you ever participated in a community sensitization program? Were the members of the community receptive? Kindly share your experience and how you were able to get them interested. #climatechange #climatechangeisreal #climateliteracy #climateactionnow
