Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery. The holiday's name is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, is a federal holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to reach Texas, which was still under Confederate control during the Civil War! 1: On June 19, 1865, news that the remaining slaves in the Union (part of the US that opposed slavery during the civil war) were freed reached the last slaves in Galveston, Texas. June 19 (Juneteenth) is celebrated as the official end of slavery in America. 2: In 1854, the Republican Party was founded by antislavery democrats after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. 3: On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the US, and first republican president. 4: On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which called for the freeing of slaves in the Union during the civil war. America also recognized the independence of Haiti and Liberia, the only two independent black republics in the world at the time, in 1862. 5: On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect. 6: On December 18, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified — LEGALLY ending slavery in the entire US. P.S. The history of slavery is a part of American history, it’s not simply a Democratic Party or Republican Party thing. Slavery existed in America long before both the Democratic Party (1828) and the Republican Party (1854) were founded. June 19 is celebrated as a federal holiday to commemorate the date—June 19, 1863–Union General Gordon Granger enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, notifying Americans still in bondage of their freedom. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which went into effect January 1, 1863, freed slaves in the states in rebellion, the Confederate states. President Lincoln was acting under the War Powers Act and his powers were limited to areas at war. It took 2 1/2 years for word the reach Texas. I agree with Winston Churchill. The American civil war was the “noblest and least avoidable” of all the great mass conflicts. The American Civil War was always over one thing only—the destruction of slavery—despite how revisionist historians try to rewrite history. The Emancipation Proclamation was a masterful move by Lincoln, as it cemented that purpose and prevented foreign powers from entering on behalf of the Confederacy. The final freeing of all slaves came with the passage of the 13th Amendment in December 1865. Happy Juneteenth. Let us honor the spirit of the holiday. #judge4vets #juneteenth2024

We can acknowledge and even celebrate the truth of our history together without dissension. Reality: On this day in 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, approximately 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston and declared by executive decree that slaves were free. This order freed over 250,000 black people that were still enslaved in Texas. Why was it delayed? The Emancipation Proclamation could not be implemented in areas that were under Confederate control. Why do we acknowledge and celebrate this day? We acknowledge it because it happened. We celebrate it because the freedom of any person or people who was once unfairly held in bondage, abused and mistreated, should be celebrated. Though there was and still is in some places an uphill battle, freed slaves who survived faced many hardships and heartaches. Many searched for family members that they had been separated from hence the importance of reunions. They had to figure out the safe places where they could gain employment and settle. They were resilient during times when many would have given up and their resilience led to the progression of a people and progression a country. A call to action: No matter your race or ethnicity, don’t be afraid to acknowledge the hard truths of our past as well as the good. The important part is to work in unity today and not allow for the mistreatment and abuse of others to happen again. We should also ask ourselves how are we impacting the world so that it is a better place, not only for ourselves and our families, but for everyone. #JuneteenthMatters #TexasHistory #AmericanHistory #OurHistory #WeAreTheChange #StrongerTogether
