Chicago saw the unveiling of a new EV prototype stock car, hinting at the future of NASCAR while working with the Swedish electrification partner ABB. The prototype features a three-motor setup powered by a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery, delivering 1,000kW peak power, and uses a modified Next Gen chassis. Developed by Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, the car showcased impressive performance, nearly matching traditional race cars. Road racing tested the brand in real-world driving on steroids (i.e., stop – go – left – right), drag racing appealed to the DIY’er for aftermarket parts purchases, and off road truck racing – well, it’s quite obvious what the “Built Ford Tough” connection is there... That brings us to NASCAR. Along with precision teamwork, excellent driving skills, and gobs of power, success in high-speed oval racing relied on a slippery body, based heavily on the production vehicle. Aerodynamics was a competitive advantage, and Ford led the way with an aero-efficient production car with the Thunderbird. Success on the high banks validated the design of the street car. NASCAR will likely never stop saying “start your engines.” But the traditional race car event has introduced an all-electric SUV, a true sign of the changing times. When NASCAR was initially founded, the goal was to represent the vehicles everyday drivers were using. The new EV prospect indicates that electric is on its way to the mainstream. The vehicle will likely keep up with its competitors — it has a maximum of 1,300 horsepower, twice as much horsepower as any of their current gas cars. 🏎️💨 What role does Formula 1 play in advancing the global automotive landscape? On the second day of #AAPEX last year, I was pleasantly startled by the unmistakable roaring of what ended up being the winner of the first ever Las Vegas Grand Prix 🏆🏁 This was the view from where I was standing as Red Bull racing zoomed up and down the strip. Often, going unnoticed by ordinary drivers, the world of motorsports drives innovation that extends far beyond the racetrack, reaching our daily lives. Out of many ways Formula 1 has influenced the technology of every day automobiles, here are a couple of examples: 1️⃣ Regenerative Braking Formula 1 teams continuously look for ways to utilize the full extend of technological advancements to achieve the highest level of efficiency and some of those discoveries make their way to every day use. One standout example is the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Initially introduced in 2009, KERS captures kinetic energy during braking and converts it into electrical energy, providing a power boost when needed. This innovation has transcended the world of racing, finding its way into hybrid systems of road cars. Next time you drive a hybrid vehicle, consider the role F1 played in advancing energy recovery technology. 2️⃣ Head and Neck Support Safety is paramount in Formula 1, it's not just for when the driver is traveling at 200mph but it's more for when the vehicle taking the sharpest curves with full traction, or when the car comes to an abrupt stop from its top speed. For all those instances, the Head and Neck Support (HANS) device stands as a testament to the commitment to driver well-being. Originating in the 1980s and gaining prominence after tragic incidents, the HANS device significantly reduces the risk of head and neck injuries. A version of this application had a direct influence in the safety features of road cars. From airbags to reinforced structures, these advancements reflect the dedication to safety that echoes the spirit of F1. Multimatic played a crucial role in building and supporting the race cars, while M-Sport contributed its expertise in crafting the engines. Roger Penske, former race car driver turned founder and chairman of Penske Corporation – and an important early mentor of mine at Penske Motorsports - envisions hybrid formulas as “a bridging strategy to the future” in both motorsport competition and general transportation. Hydrogen fuel is another alternative being looked at for racing. I’ve always respected Mr. Penske’s ability to stand behind tough truths. Although electric vehicles have been the thing to beat for some time, there’s no denying it when industry pros like Penske say the EV marketplace is underperforming and the infrastructure just isn’t there.
