In our ‘Behind the Scenes’ series, we explore the daily operations and processes of several companies within the port of Rotterdam. We offer a glimpse into the activities of various companies in Europe’s largest port. This time, we stay on shore as we explore the world of the shipyards. Eleven tugs have been transported on one vessel from Asia to Europe in a rare major logistical operation that was all Dutch in achievement. Dutch firm BigLift Shipping B.V. deployed its 156m heavy-lift vessel Happy Star to transport the 11 Damen tugs, with two heavy-lift mast cranes weighing 1,100 tonnes each on board. On April 4, Happy Star set sail from Damen’s shipyard in Halong Bay in Vietnam for Europe., and arrived in Vigo, Spain just 38 days later. One vessel was unloaded there before she continued to Rotterdam to unload the remaining 10 on May 19. Happy Star can lift up to 2,200 mt in tandem lift, with a lifting height of nearly 47m above the main deck. With a weather deck extending over the full width of the vessel, her load space can be used to the utmost and she can sail with open weather deck hatches on a draught of up to 8m. The vessel has Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class notation. “These mass deliveries do not take place often as it is rare that so many vessels are ready to be dispatched at the same time,” said Damen Services Heavylift coordinator Rimmert Berlijn. “The last such event occurred in 2015 when Happy Star transported 22 vessels of various types on the same route." “However, this brings advantages versus delivering vessels on their own hulls. These include having the vessels and their equipment arriving in pristine condition. The marine environment also benefits from having fewer emissions with just one ship, albeit a larger one, doing all the work. These outcomes align well with Damen’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.” Read the full story on Maritime Journal; https://lnkd.in/ewt97NrZ

Greetings, maritime enthusiasts and fellow professionals! 🌊🔧 In our dynamic industry, innovation and adaptability are paramount. The Balmoral's impressive transformation at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg 🏗️ stands as a prime illustration of this ethos. A Brief History 🕰️: Embarking on its journey as the "Crown Odyssey" in 1988, the vessel underwent numerous evolutions before its monumental refurbishment under the guidance of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. The Engineering Feat 🛠️: Between 2007-2008, a visionary choice was made to expand the Balmoral's capacity. Skillfully bisecting the ship, a 30-meter (approximately 99 feet) pre-built midsection was integrated. This intricate procedure demanded flawless synchronization of systems 🔄, assuring seamless functionality post-extension. Outcome 🚀: Beyond augmenting space, this endeavor enhanced its amenities, elevating the Balmoral to provide a premier passenger experience 🌟. Balmoral's revitalization exemplifies the maritime sector's dedication to progress and meticulous engineering. It's a testament to the extraordinary outcomes achieved when innovation meets expertise 🌐. #MaritimeEngineering #MaritimeInnovation #BlohmVossMastery #BeyondBoundaries #ShipLengthening #ShipRefurbishment #MaritimeMilestones #MaritimeTech

When I first learned about this process, they called it 'jumbo-isation' - increasing the size/capacity of vessels. Conversions require excellent naval architects & engineering to avoid hull stress fractures. #ShipBuilding #CommercialHull #ShipRepairing #MaritimeTrades #MaritimeEngineering #VesselConversion #ShipLengthening

We welcome shipyard representatives and all other visitors to our stand at Europort exhibition this week! Our Leonardo I and II are already the dominant leveling screw jacks in the large Italian peninsula, which has a long coastline with many large, medium and small shipyards. We have written several posts about the economic, environmental and safety benefits of our jacks, so today we would like to share some interesting facts about the shipyard industry in Europe. First, the Community of European Shipyards' Associations, better known by its acronym, CESA, represents the interests of the shipyards in Europe, and, as you might expect, it is based in Brussels, the heart of the European Union. Founded in 1937 as the "International Shipbuilding Conference," the organization was reconstituted after the world as the "West European Shipbuilders Informal Contacts" and then renamed as the "Association of West European Shipbuilders" (AWES) in 1965. In the 1980s, AWES formed a committee to liaise with the European Community, which eventually evolved into a separate sister organization, CESA; however, in 2004, AWES and CESA merged back into a single organization, retaining the name CESA. As one might expect, with the fall of communism, CESA's membership expanded to include Central and Eastern European countries and now includes Turkey. Second, according to CESA, the European shipbuilding sector currently comprises some 300 specialized shipyards that build and repair highly complex and technologically sophisticated civil and naval vessels, platforms, and other maritime hardware, generating an annual production value of roughly 42 billion euros and providing over 300,000 direct jobs across Europe. Third, while the building of tankers, bulk carriers and container ships has shifted to Asia over the last two decades, mainly to China, South Korea, and Japan, the European yards still maintain an edge in the construction of more sophisticated vessels such as cruise ships, ferries, offshore supply vessels, research vessels, and sophisticated naval vessels, and also keep a dynamic industry regarding workboats, fishing vessels, dredgers, and tugs. At our stand (Hall 6, Stand 6400), you can meet Davide Baccolini, head of the ATP | Innovative Sealing Solutions naval sector, and see our Leonardo levelers firsthand. Davide will be at your disposal to illustrate the characteristics and operation of our innovative screw jacks, available in two versions capable of supporting up to 50 and 110 tons, respectively, in maximum safety conditions. We will conclude this article with a graph from CESA showing the increasing complexity of shipbuilding; as you can see, the complexity of building research vessels and cruise ships, two of Europe's specialties, is just below that of building state-of-the-art aircraft carriers.
