WHAT IS ‘PIXAR THEORY’? Have you ever observed that every Pixar film takes place in the same timeline, with Easter eggs and subtle references linking them together? If YES, then you qualify as a member of the global fan club of Pixar movies and esp. believe in Pixar Theory! Pixar Theory is a widely discussed fan theory, which suggests that all Pixar movies exist within the same interconnected universe. For example: >> Every Pixar film takes place in the same timeline, with Easter eggs and subtle references linking them together. >> Any movie of Pixar follows a chronological order, with events in one film interconnected or leading to the next. HOW DID IT ALL START? In 2009, a CityNews article in Toronto, probably discussed connections between several Pixar films for the first time. This was followed by a video – “After Hours” – published in in 2013, which supported this observation. Around the same year, a passionate YouTuber named Jon Negroni proposed a detailed timeline and narrative connection of all Pixar movies released around that time. He also incorporated concepts like importance of human emotions animal sentience, and a technological timeline tied to human advancements. His theory gained traction through his website and social media presence. His YouTube channel Super Carlin Brothers further popularized it with video breakdowns and analyses. Subsequently, as new Pixar films were released, Negroni and other fans adapted the theory to incorporate them. Different interpretations and variations emerged, offering alternative timelines and explanations. Pixar Animation Studios however doesn’t endorse this; but acknowledges the creativity and enthusiasm of its fan base, by playful inclusion of Easter Eggs. I just finished watching Inside Out 2 and I just realize something personally. Three Realizations from Inside Out 2: 1. When we try to forcefully fit in, anxiety kicks in, and when it does, even the joyful parts of our life can feel hopeless. 2. What we are now is the product of the good and bad memories we experience. It may hurt sometimes, but the lessons we learn from those experiences shape who we are. 3. When we constantly worry about what might go wrong in the future, we eventually undermine what's happening in the present. Another masterpiece by Pixar, Inside Out, brilliantly showcases the value of understanding our own emotions.

Revisiting "Inside Out," Pixar's masterpiece from the last decade, that is a brilliant brilliant exploration of human emotions. But this post is not about the movie, it’s about the intricate details taken care of, in the portrayal of emotions that bring its characters to life. One fascinating detail is how the emotions are visually represented. Each emotion—Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sadness— is distinguished by a unique color scheme. Except Joy. Joy, is not confined to a single color. While she predominantly radiates bright yellows, her blue hair subtly connects her to Sadness. This visual detail hints at a deeper connection between these two emotions, setting the stage for a profound narrative revelation. In a pivotal moment when Riley’s feelings are crumbling, and none of the emotions can pull her out of her numbness, it is Sadness that ultimately initiates a transformative change. By touching Riley's core memories, Sadness catalyzes a poignant shift that allows Joy to resurface. The touch brings forth a flood of joyful memories— interwoven with tears, creating a powerful realization: Joy and Sadness are not mere opposites but are deeply interconnected—and this is what makes the memories profound and meaningful! And this is what stories that become ‘core memories’ are made of.

Firstly, now we know why Steve Jobs was fascinated with Pixar. After the little one (now a mid-teenager) had watched part1 almost 10 years ago, he's been bugging this summer to follow up with part2. My wife isn't a fan of animated, but I am unfazed. Why not? I wasn't at part1 afterall. The plot is simple. Part1 was about Riley's five emotions at 11 when moving from Midwest to SF. The core emotions are namely Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger, all in the form of animated islands surrounding her. In the sequel at 13 about to enter high school, Riley has four more emotions now plaguing her, Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. My wife still not impressed, whereas I thought the nine emotions are beyond my little one. And then, he said the director is v smart as there are 18 more emotions to go for a few more sequels at least! (27 in total!) He is a thinking movie-buff ?! Suddenly, I believe that the original plotter, Pete Docter, is alot more profound with 27 emotions than the hierarchy of needs, while observing his daughter's growth. In this era and cycle now, how are we coping with our emotions? Bible says No Envy No Anxiety. But still? P.S, the tickets at Zhuhai city in Southern China ain't cheap, for RMB45.5 per tic at discounted prices and RMB5.50 for each pair of 3D-glasses. Still, almost full-house.
