Global tyre manufacturer Pirelli announced that it will only use FSC-certified tyres in all Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Formula One World Championship™ races starting from 2024. 🌿🏎️🌍 🏁FSC-certified tyres were introduced for the first time in 2021 when Pirelli made a breakthrough by producing the world’s first Pirelli P ZERO tyre that uses FSC-certified natural rubber. Since the historic announcement, Pirelli's FSC-certified tyre has accelerated growth of sustainable natural rubber certification worldwide.. 🌳 Why is this shift so important? Tyre manufacturers purchase over 70% of the world's natural rubber, and by choosing uncertified rubber, we risk harming forests, ecosystems, communities, and workers' rights. Fabian Farkas, Chief Commercial Officer at FSC International, sums it up perfectly: "This move towards FSC certification sets a powerful precedent for sustainable practices in motorsport, showcasing that high performance and environmental responsibility can seamlessly coexist. Rubber is deeply embedded in the automotive industry, and more companies must follow this movement towards sustainability through FSC certification, confirming that forests are managed to strict environmental, social, and economic standards." 🚴♂️🌍 Expansion of Pyrum rCB in Schwalbe's Tire Range 🌍🚴♂️ One year after the bicycle tire manufacturer Schwalbe - Ralf Bohle GmbH introduced the world's first circular tire using Pyrum rCB, the use of rCB in tire production has massively expanded. From now on, 70% of all Schwalbe tires will be made from Pyrum rCB. In the recycling system, we handle the recycling of the tires. The recovered carbon black is sent back to Schwalbe to manufacture new bicycle tires. The rCB fully replaces fossil industrial carbon black in the production of new tires without compromising quality and simultaneously saving 80% CO₂ equivalent. Due to its versatile applications, rCB is now also used in Schwalbe's high-end tires for road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes, as well as city and cargo bikes. Felix Jahn, Head of CSR at Schwalbe, stated: "This is another milestone on our path of ecological responsibility. Through intensive research and development work, we have managed to switch to rCB use without compromising the quality and performance of our tires. This is always our top priority when using recycled materials." Pascal Klein, CEO of Pyrum Innovations AG, added: "It's gratifying to see how our rCB is gaining importance in sustainable tire production. That already 70% of Schwalbe's range is made from our rCB not only proves the quality of our product but also shows that great things can be achieved with a lot of commitment and collaboration." To date, 940,000 bicycle tires have already been recycled and reintroduced into the cycle. 👏 Bridgestone Corporation and Michelin Group have partnered up and published their work on developing a proposed global standard to increase the use of recovered carbon black back into new tyres. ♻ Recovered carbon black is an alternative to virgin carbon black, which is produced by burning fossil fuels. Another article in the endless stream about how many twisting backflips are needed to figure out how to deal with the flood of #plastic going into the #singlestream #recycling bins. Does anyone really think that removing chasing arrows ♻️ from plastic containers will have a meaningful impact on the plastic recycling challenges? Isn’t a big issue the hidden complexities of single-stream recycling? There’s almost not a week that goes by without someone publishing a giant list of rules one must follow to “single stream” effectively. This is one of many proof points that single-stream effectiveness depends on the user's facility with a complicated and lengthy set of rules (often unwritten and hard to find if they are). Rules, which by the way, vary from city to city, state to state, and even neighborhood to neighborhood. A recent piece from Bloomberg in the comments 👇 is a great illustration of this point. Maybe removing chasing arrows will help. It seems, though, like we need to think more about really making recycling simple and effective for people. We love SailGP's Impact League – a healthy dose of competition to be the most sustainable team in the race season! For the Season 4 Impact League, teams were challenged to come up with solutions and innovations to reduce waste, drive circularity and eliminate single-use plastics. Congrats to the Australia SailGP Team for winning first place for their innovative solution to reduce single use plastics such as cling film, sticky backed plastic and tape used for emergency on-water repairs. The team developed an alternative front fairing in collaboration with Doyles Sails and the Tech team, which should be a league-wide solution by later this season. Kudos to Switzerland SailGP Team and Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team for making it onto the podium of SailGP's first Impact League focus area: The Race to Zero Waste. The Impact League was judged by a panel of industry experts, and adjudicated by our very own Joshua Brunert, to oversee a fair and consistent process.
