AFROTECH the largest black tech conference, brought thousands of Black professionals together to not only celebrate our successes but to impel the agenda to increase the representation of the black and brown people in the Tech industries. And I can say nothing is more stimulating then this. I had the wonderful opportunity to be in the presences of creative thinkers, technologists, innovators,and the leaders of tomorrow. Being surrounded by high level intelligence and intrigued in organic conversations is a quality experience. 🌟 Embracing Diversity in Tech: Black Tech Fest 🌟 Super excited to be attending the Black Tech Fest, and I couldn't be more thrilled about the opportunity to engage with this inspiring project. As this is my first event with the Black Tech Fest, I look forward to connecting, learning, and exploring opportunities for meaningful collaboration. The power of diversity within the tech industry cannot be underestimated. It is not just about achieving great business; it's about enjoying the full experience of humanity. I am truly inspired by the impactful strides being made in reshaping the tech landscape advocating for increased representation and in some cases smashing the door open to create opportunities. 🚀 The Black Tech Fest stands as a remarkable platform that exemplifies the importance of diversity and inclusion in the startup ecosystem. A major salute to all the dedicated allies who are contributing significantly to addressing this issue. The work you do to champion and collaborate with black professionals in tech is a testament to the strength of unity and the potential for meaningful change. 🫡🫡🫡

After seeing so many celebrate with their companies, it's a bit disheartening to see so many holiday parties with so few people of color. It is incredible how many of us want to be in these spaces, and yet, we are missing. In 2023, Eight Black CEOs helm companies on Fortune's ranking—the highest since the 500's debut in 1955. Two Black executives joined the ranking for the first time. Is it me, or are we (People of color) disappearing from corporate spaces, and why? Ask yourself why and what you (as a hiring manager or people leader) can do to diversify your spaces and be inclusive in your hiring practices.

11 years ago we made the leap to set up Radiant and Brighter. I remember going to an employment agency hoping to register with them but within 2 minutes I was turned away by the receptionist who appeared annoyed at me for even turning up there. My 15 years' work experience which included 5 years working as a receptionist in a very well known hotel chain, 4 years experience training staff members in big organisations on how to use software and products such as the first pocket PC (anyone remember these) before every phone became a computer and nearly 5 years setting up and managing an initiative with 10 volunteers all counted for nothing. Radiant and Brighter was not only a way out of the nightmare of trying to find work for Micheal Matovu and I, it was also a response to our deep desire to change the experiences of others like us, people who wanted to work but were trapped in a system that didn't appreciate their contribution, untapped skills and talent. What we didn't foresee were the challenges that awaited us as black entrepreneurs in Scotland, not only would the system push back, we would discover the business language was peculiar. Statements like "that idea has potential" didn't really mean our idea was great, rather it meant it "mnh that's not such a good idea". The challenges increased our resolve to learn and grow so we plodded on -and this is the story for many entrepreneurs, some who are starting out now. This is why, for this year's #BlackHistoryMonth we are partnering with CodeBase to celebrate the journeys, the experiences and the successes in a shared learning round table discussion.
