🎉 It’s a wrap for the #WomenInProduct conference 2024! I had the joy of diving into a sea of ideas and wisdom at different sessions last week. After the conference, we - WIP SF South Bay Chapter - got to meet in person to share our takeaways, which made it even more special. A big shout-out 🗣 to Judy Chang, Vidya Venkatesh, and Hitashi Dhawan, our South Bay chapter leads, for hosting such an amazing post-conference mixer. Here are some of the moments that resonated with me the most: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Teresa Torres & Kaelin Burns emphasized the power of incremental actions we can do to build the continuous product discovery habit for ourselves and for the team. Their advice was clear: don't wait for permission to make changes; don’t wait for a perfect product culture to do product discovery; start with things that you can do, even if it’s as simple as being a fly on the wall in a sales call - an opportunity to get exposure to customers if you don’t normally have it. 𝗡𝗼 '𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗺𝗲' 𝗮𝗻𝗱 '𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗲'—𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 Productivity coach, Laura Mae Martin, tells us there’s no 'work me' and 'home me'— I am just one whole person. I really love her idea of combining work and family tasks into a single to-do list to help prioritize. It totally makes sense to me. So now, I make sure to block out time for personal things, like going for a walk with my baby, right in my calendar. This way, I'm sure to carve out those precious moments, and they don’t get bumped by work or job interviews. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 The dialogue shifted towards authentic leadership with Eunice Kim (CPO at Netflix) and Elizabeth Stone (CTO at Netflix), who shared their personal leadership styles. Eunice, coaching the team to do their best with a vision of "raising the bar," and Elizabeth, advocating for uniqueness over conformity, underscored leading with empathy and ensuring your team feels supported. They inspired me to foster an environment where open, constructive feedback is the norm, enabling everyone to thrive. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁 Jennifer Blatz presented a powerful reminder: we are all on our unique journeys to get to where we want to be. Don’t compare yourself with others - you don’t know what path they chose or the corners they cut to get to the success they have. We are special and the best in our own standards. 🙌 Remember, progress is made through small, intentional actions. As a mom of two—a toddler and a baby—here are a few life hacks that keep me sane: 1️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞: - My toddler heads to bed in whatever he picks out for school the next day—even if it's his pajamas. Why not? It saves us both the morning rush and the wardrobe wars. And he never complains! - After a panel discussion about work-life balance from a Women In Product meetup, I adopted a game-changing mindset: I’ve stopped fretting over a spotless house when friends come over. Why aim for perfection when the goal is to enjoy each other's company? 2️⃣ 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 of household chores: Inspired by the book #FairPlay, which discusses the vast amount of unpaid, invisible work that women take on for the family and how to address it. We need to have open communication with our partner and implement tools to divide and conquer those visible and invisible work—who should take the lead on every chore from laundry to homework to dinner. I love our fabulous chore board on the fridge (see image)! 3️⃣ 𝐌𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: Make space and time for yourself to relax, be creative, and to DREAM. Whether it's brunching with besties (fill up that mimosas! 🥂 ), enjoying a spa day, or exploring a new hiking trail—find time for you. And if finding childcare is tough, consider sneaking in a half-work-day off during those school hours. 4️⃣ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞: It truly takes a village to raise a kid. Don’t do it alone—reach out, share responsibilities, and soak up support from family, friends, and fellow moms. Every bit helps! Let’s be real:  A job search is a sales job, and keeping your "pipeline" full is critical. 📝 As a data nerd, I've been tracking every detail of my job applications—where they come from, what stage they're at, and what happens next. My goal? To figure out what's working, what isn't, and how I can get better results. After all, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results is a no-go. 📊 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: 😨 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐆𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐞: A whopping 77% of my online applications (that’s 31 out of 40) didn’t land me any initial recruiter call. Lesson learned? If I don’t keep the top of my funnel loaded, the rest doesn’t even matter. So, I've taken a deep dive into my upper funnel to see where things are going wrong (see source breakdown in screenshot 2) 🧊 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭—𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝: Despite customizing my resume for each #qualified role, this time around, I didn’t get a single call back (that’s ZERO success out of all the 25 cold applications). It’s clear the market has changed, and this old tactic isn’t cutting it anymore. 📈 𝐈𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝: When company recruiters reached out from LinkedIn InMail, I got 100% conversion rate on HR call, 50% on HM call. This tells me I need to be more visible and proactive on LinkedIn. 🤝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬: Many conferences feature employer booths—take advantage of these. Make a point to visit, engage with the recruiters, and tell them what you are looking for. Referrals also led to a decent conversion rate (38%) on HR calls. There's great value in strengthening connections and seeking referrals actively. 📝 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝: I'm tweaking my approach: more networking, better use of LinkedIn, and definitely more reaching out for referrals. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈’𝐦 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. And I'll keep updating my job pipeline analysis, so stay tuned. Has anyone else found new tactics that work? I’d love to swap tips and stories!
