Have you heard the term "Language Access?" If you're not familiar, "language access" refers to the efforts and measures taken to ensure that individuals who speak different languages, particularly non-native speakers or those who do not speak the dominant language of a region, have equal access to public services, information, and opportunities. It includes providing translation and interpretation services, developing multilingual resources, and ensuring that language barriers do not prevent individuals from receiving healthcare, education, legal aid, and other essential services. This concept is crucial for inclusivity, equal rights, and effective communication in diverse societies. #languageaccess #diversityandinclusion

As we get closer to announcing Cohort 1, a common question is what can a small language model do better than a large language model ? Let's start with effective communication. According to US 2021 Census Bureau data, nearly one third of Florida households speak a non-English language at home, with 4.5 MN households speaking Spanish. Many of these households are bi-lingual and "code switch" alternating between their home language and American English - or even Miami English. A small language model is the perfect technology to train a non-English model and American English to create a bi-language model for code switchers. The varieties include Hispanic Dialects (Cuban, Venezuelan, Honduran, the list goes on), Portuguese Dialects (Brazilian regions) as well as popular languages such as Haitian Creole and Patois. These models can be deployed by not-for-profits, commercial entities and local governments to provide modern interfaces to answer questions (for example via a ChatBot), help generate data to apply for services (using Generative Text), searching websites and public documents (language based search). Effective communication requires understanding, and communicating with the public in their preferred language(s) make a big difference in breaking down barriers and sharing information effectively. Do you work with Spanish speakers? With approximately 430 languages spoken in the U.S., it is imperative to approach assessment of dual language learners from a positive lens. According to the 2020 US Census, there are around 54.2 million Spanish speakers in the U.S. These are some typical differences noted in Spanish-English bilinguals that should NOT be counted as articulation errors during speech-language assessments. Save this post for future reference. #speechlanguagepathology #bilingual
