Everybody talks about fluency but a successful conversation depends on 'confluence'. Confluence, coming or flowing together, happens when conversational partners work together to ensure a conversation flows. Both parties are responsible for managing conversations. It’s not the sole responsibility of the less fluent speaker to improve their fluency; the more fluent speaker should also fine-tune and adjust their speaking rate, pauses, and turn-taking to adapt to their conversational partner. When you assess speaking fluency, do you also assess your learner's ability and willingness to faciliate the co-construction of the conversation? #englishteaching #elt #tefl

“INTERPRETERS NEVER ASK FOR FEEDBACK” Yeah, you read it right. This is a familiar refrain in our industry, which may contradict everything I have learned about the importance of feedback. But what do we do when feedback is received without asking? Recently, on the last day of a long-term workshop, I experienced a heartwarming moment that underscored the value of feedback, even when it catches us by surprise. As the session drew to a close, participants engaged in an activity that didn't require my interpretation services. Yet, to my surprise, several participants suddenly approached me and handed me sticky notes (some shown in the picture)- as a token of appreciation, and even one participant hugged me and thanked me for my service!!😊 This moment was truly memorable, serving as a reminder of the importance of feedback. Feedback is indeed a powerful, albeit simple, tool to assess our abilities and to explore our weaknesses and strengths. For me, feedback, even the harshest one, is a motivation for self-improvement. What about you? I’m curious to hear your thoughts!🙏 #interpreting #interpretation #translationservices #English #Arabic #French #simultaneousinterpretation
