On December 6th we celebrate #SaintNicholas Day in memory of Saint #Nicholas, who is revered in parts of Europe as the "angel on earth" or "savior of the world".  Many children associate the sixth of December with the custom of leaving their polished boots outside the door the night before, which are then filled with delicacies such as chocolate, gingerbread, and nuts by St. Nicholas on that night. But Saint Nicholas was much more than that. The "real" chocolate Saint Nicholas carries three golden apples in his hand. He gives this to three children as a gift. But what is the meaning of the three golden apples? This is probably the most famous story that is told about Nikolaus' work in Myra: »Once there lived a man who had three daughters. He himself was so ill that he could not work and his wife had died. So the family lived in great poverty because without the necessary money the father could not take care of his three daughters. In his distress, he had no choice but to offer the girls as prostitutes in the marketplace. At the same time, young Nikolaus had just become heir to a large fortune and he heard about the girl's plight. He decided to act immediately and help the family. During the night he went secretly to the open window, where the three girls were sleeping soundly. He carefully threw in three nuggets of gold. They were in the shape of apples. In order not to wake the girls, Nikolaus slipped away quietly. The next morning the youngest daughter discovered the rich gift and immediately woke up her father and her two sisters. The relief of the family was great and the plight of the three girls was suddenly over. They never had to perform dishonest services again and their father was even able to give his daughters a rich dowry. I haven’t slept in two days because I’ve been stressed the hell out about money. As a result, this post may be chaotic. But first, please go watch The Burial on Amazon Prime. That’s who you should be mad at - not poor people. Speaking of poor people, a lot of y’all hate us and it shows. You blame us for our circumstances and “should” all over us as if we aren’t trying our hardest to survive. Do you know how I know? Because I see it in my messages and comment section. If you could only see the DM’s I’ve received. “GET A JOB.”  Well shucks, I never thought of that! “YOU ASK TOO MUCH.” You’re right, my bad. Lemme shut up and die quietly in shame. “IF YOU WOULD JUST…” I’ma stop you right there. When people openly ask for support, please understand that it is the absolute last thing we want to do. Trust that we have exhausted every other option. Poor people are the most creative folks I know when it comes to money - we have to be. Listen, I was on the phone with my bank at 4:30am trying to unfreeze my overdraft checking before my rent check bounces in the next 24 hours. If it does work out, then I’ll be in the negative by $1100. (One of my accounts was already overdrawn lmao.) But who cares because I HAVE A HOME FOR ANOTHER MONTH. With that said, my… 🚫 Car note (repo pending) 🚫 Car insurance (cancellation pending) 🚫 Eye exam for my third damn surgery  ($100)  🚫Dental appointment ($65 eval for my broken front tooth) and  🚫 Vaccine visits for the littles (two weeks past due) …remain unpaid. This is clown shit. Why, Robin? Why do you continue to overshare this way? Because I want folks to understand the trauma and stress that poor people live with on a daily basis. I genuinely worry that I’ll drop dead from a heart attack or stroke at any moment. Stress kills. And the stats for Black women? Bleak AF. All that to say, nope. I won’t quit advocating for my needs as loudly as I can for as long as I have to. Poverty is not a failure of the individual - it’s a systemic failure. Help people or leave them alone. Whatever you do, please don’t add to our stress with your unhelpful judgment and opinions. It ain’t gotta be me, but if you’re able to support someone in need, please do it. “Durham's Effective Basic Income Pilot Program” In 2022, Tydricka Lewis, a single mother with three children, was selected for Durham, North Carolina's basic income pilot program. This program enabled her to purchase a reliable car for commuting to work. Participants in the program received a monthly stipend of $600. Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, contributed $15 million to Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, an advocacy group supporting the initiation of basic-income programs in various American cities and towns. Durham, benefitting from this funding, aimed to observe the impact of an unconditional income stream. Mayor Mark-Anthony Middleton expressed interest in seeing the effects of such income without any moral judgments attached. Durham has seen its lower-income and Black populations marginalized with the city's rapid growth. The Hayti community, historically a Black hub, has become increasingly white, accompanied by soaring housing prices. The city chose to allocate the basic-income funds to a group of its formerly incarcerated residents. The concept of a basic income has been proposed by various US presidents and leaders over the years. Those selected for Durham's pilot program had the freedom to spend the money as they wished. The funds were typically used for everyday expenses like rent, bills, and groceries. ♠️🌈 Money doesn’t Grow on trees 🌲 ♠️🌈 IYKYK… do y’all remember when our parents or grandparents use to tell us money doesn’t grow on trees. That statement was used on a weekly rotation, if not more than that because I was a kid who wanted new things. I wanted the new cars, the new play sets, the new gadget that came out. I barely remember what I asked for then but I remembered “money doesn’t grow on trees!” Over the last few years, I have be working on my money mindset. In minority communities, we aren’t taught about financial literacy. We don’t learn how to balance a check book, pay tax, launch businesses, how to properly use credit cards! We are not educated around money. We are taught how to work and how to spend it but never how to grow it for ourselves. The best thing about joining network marketing in 2013 and now having an affiliate marketing company that does 6 figures annually is that I had to grow my money mindset. Y’all!! If the Federal Reserve can print money every day of the week, we can grow our own money trees.. We have to let go of the idea that money is hard to come by. We have to let go of the idea that we have to hustle for money. We have to let go of the idea that we must work 8-16 hour long days to have good money. We have to let go of the idea that we must hold on/save money. All of these mindsets are hurting you, your financial standing, and your dreams! I invite you to release the negative ideas around money and look for abundance! Money is an energy and it’s free flowing. We both agreed that the current narratives about race/racism (anti-racism, identity politics, white-privilege, and woke ideology in general) weaponized by both the left and the right have resulted in increased social division and racial tribalism and threaten to racialize humanity even more which, in our opinion, is a step in the wrong direction. Say Something Mission Our mission is to consign injustice to history with neuroscience. We believe that the best weapon in the fight against racism is SCIENCE. Science Can Transform Minds. We are revolutionizing the human brain by reducing implicit bias, transcending toxic tribalism and racism, encouraging new responses/behaviors, fostering new skills for interaction. Science Can Change the Conversation. We are calling on the global community to adopt the current scientific definition of race - there is only one race, the human race - and ditch the conventional pseudoscientific definition of race which perpetuates racial essentialism. Science Can Create a More Just World. We are recommending adopting colorblindness in hiring and admission practices, cultivating meritocracy and creating opportunity for all human beings. In addition, we are launching two programs specifically designed to raise awareness of racism and to empower individuals to intervene on the behalf of someone facing discrimination or harassment. SAY SOMETHING METHOD: Empower individuals with science-based methods to Say Something (intervene) in support of someone facing injustice/racism in public and private spaces. SAY SOMETHING STORIES: Present the stories of individuals who have been the targets of injustice/racism describing the experience and highlighting their individuality to invite the viewer to"step into the shoes" of that person, create empathy, and elicit in-group associations.
