Carbon Dioxide Removal (#CDR) – an idea whose time has come? Well, everything about Carbon Dioxide Removal seems to be big – its CO2 removal potential, its economic potential, but likewise the uncertainties and needs for action to bring it to scale. Here are some of my key takeaways from our recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG)Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) report: https://lnkd.in/dDNWyJtd 🌍 Today, only 0.3% of annual human-made emissions are removed by humans (0.015 Gt/a) 📈 For 2050, typical scenarios show 0.75 Gt/a (current trajectory) to 9 Gt/a (for a 1.5 °C pathway). This is a factor of 12 difference, reflecting the massive uncertainties around regulation, market design, and cost evolution 🔄 Personally, I believe in a balanced mix of 10+ removal methods across nature-based, enhanced natural processes and tech-based removal categories 💶 The revenue potential for the CDR industry could reach one trillion Euros globally by 2050, assuming a scale-up aligned to a 1.5 °C pathway. For a 2.0 °C pathway, it’s about half of this, and much less for current trajectories 🚀 However, to get to these orders of magnitude, many prerequisites will yet need to be met – the need for action for policymakers, the CDR industry, and CDR buyers is massive 📋 We list 15 actions to overcome regulatory uncertainty, bring down costs, and tackle other roadblocks A big thank you to DVNE and my colleagues Robin Bierganz, Louisa Maier, Karan Mistry, PhD, Dr. Johanna Puetz Puetz and Phillip Spiekermann for your great teaming in developing this interesting perspective! Enjoy reading. See today‘s Handelsblatt article for a nice summary: https://lnkd.in/dwdtn7Bw #CarbonDioxideRemoval #NetZero #Sustainability
