Anya Domlesky has been selected as an LAF Fellow for the 2024-25 LAF Fellowship for Leadership and Innovation. Anya is Director of Research at SWA in Chicago. Her fellowship project is titled "Infrastructure, Rescripted: The Public Realm on a Mass Scale." Project Description: Transportation space today dominates the public realm in the United States. Dallas, Texas' urban land is typical; in aggregate, roadways fill 20% of the county's land area. Park space—at half of that—fills 10%. Currently, we allot more than twice the area to transportation as we do to our commons. But we are also living in a moment of transition for transportation. Much of the land area currently occupied by port, river, rail, and road infrastructure will be obsolescing tomorrow. And since much of transportation space is publicly held, it can be adapted for uses with broader benefits, more reflective of public values. The profession has produced sterling individual infrastructure adaptation projects, but it needs to attend to the larger concept and the larger urban network to increase impact. #LandscapeArchitecture #LandscapeArchitect

🌆 Greater Washington's resilience shines as new development projects emerge in 2023, even amidst economic challenges. From innovative office-to-residential conversions to fresh public housing initiatives, our region is buzzing with potential. In D.C., where over $81.6 billion in projects have been realized since 2000, the focus is shifting. The trend? More mixed-use and residential endeavors, reflecting our city's dynamic needs. Our recent State of the District and Region Conference shed light on this evolution. Leaders, including Alex Orfinger of the Washington Business Journal, emphasized the significance of revitalizing downtown and fostering business growth. Gerren Price of Downtown D.C. BID highlighted the strategic importance of transforming underutilized spaces, adapting to the city's growth trajectory. D.C.'s future is bright, and we're here for it! interesting points... “It is almost impossible to design a bridge pier to withstand this kind of impact. Therefore, we tend to design impact protection measures to prevent it from happening instead." “Dolphins or other vessel impact protection devices in the water are commonplace since the Sunshine Skyway collapse in 1980. But this bridge was built in the 1970’s, so the design would not have incorporated these devices at that time. The fact that a vessel can veer off course and hit the pier is the reason to design vessel impact protection systems so that a large vessel cannot hit the critical bridge support."

DID YOU KNOW? New York City’s historic armories can be seen all around the city, and are currently used for all kinds of purposes in addition to some that retain their original function. They were built between the 18th and 20th centuries for New York State volunteer militia, serving as storage of arms and housing. These monumental fortresses were meant to remind the public of the military’s might and ability to maintain domestic law. Thankfully for us, the militia took great care in designing their fortresses and we have been left with remarkable armories that remind us of an important time in our city’s history. Some still function as National Guard posts, but many have been repurposed since the mid-20th century. 📷 Pictured is an armory right in our backyard. Rose Hill Armory Hall, Fordham University Rose Hill Campus [Built in 1838] Rose Hill Armory Hall at Fordham University in the Bronx dates back to when the university was known as St. John’s College. This building is the second Rose Hill Manor House, which contained an armory inside. The second manor house replaced an earlier one which according to legend was a headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution. Today, it houses Campus Administration for Fordham. Lothrop Associates Architects has partnered with Fordham University on projects throughout the campus. We are a full-service architectural and interior design firm that has been servicing the higher education institutional market for more than 50 years. Clients include SUNY Westchester Community College, State University of New York at Plattsburgh, State University of New York Cortland, Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, State University of New York Maritime College, and Baruch College ... just to name a few. #architecture #design #historic

The January/February issue of Texas Architect is now online! In this issue, we study the nature of “third places” and their role in our communities. We explore the urban conditions of Texas cities and how they contribute to, and often hinder, a sense of neighborliness. We then examine the many functions that new libraries are assuming to support healthier, more resilient communities. Finally, we dive into some of Texas’s most iconic cultural hubs — our public swimming pools — to understand what led to their establishment and, in some cases, their demise. Also in this issue: community centers in Austin, Houston, and Dallas; the National Juneteenth Museum, the Children’s Bereavement Center in Uvalde; a photo essay by Herman Ellis Dyal, FAIA; window and door products; review of “Why Public Space Matters” by Setha Low; and more.
