November 2023 Update
Data tracked by IndyPedCrisis in November shows a startling year-over-year increase in incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists in Indianapolis which confirms that this crisis is continuing to worsen.
A total of 72 incidents were reported during the month, with 62 involving pedestrians and 10 involving bicyclists. A total of 4 incidents, all involving pedestrians, were fatal — with 2 of those 4 being the result of a hit-and-run.
At least one person was struck every single day of the month except for one day — November 29th.
Year-over-year, November saw a staggering 89% increase in total reported incidents with 38 in 2022 increasing to 72 in 2023.
The 72 reported incidents for November 2023 makes it the 3rd worst month for total incidents since IndyPedCrisis started tracking incidents in May of 2022. The only months with more reported incidents are July 2023 with 74 and September 2023 with 73.
The week of Monday, November 20th through Sunday, November 26th saw a startling 22 people struck, including 1 fatality - tying the previous record for most incidents reported during a single week (October 2-8, 2023).
A vigil was held on Sunday, November 19th, 2023 as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims where local pedestrian and bicyclist safety advocates remembered those killed and once again called for the city of Indianapolis to commit to Vision Zero.
