A note on flexible technologies…… I feel like I’ve been on repeat this week with the same conversation five times over with five separate technology providers. If your “energy transition technology” - be it thermal storage, direct air CO2 capture, green hydrogen production or any other - cannot flex to turn off (or significantly reduce) import MW at times of low renewables generation/high demand - then you are adding to the challenge of reducing carbon emissions. You will be technologies forcing the high CO2 generation on to the grid in peak demand periods, completely quashing your claims for how many green homes you are powering or how many ICE cars equivalent you are saving. I understand the necessary journey of technology development - and all kit inherently likes running at a single load point 24/7 - but if your design development basis is not to reach a point of significant import load flexibility then please revisit it. DESNZ business models may be incentivising you to maximise baseload production but this is NOT the appropriate long term solution. Unless of course you are operating in a significantly constrained transmission location - but grids £60bn is going to solve that right?!
