𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗲 Today is the 1 year anniversary of the passing of Queen Elizabeth. She reigned for 70 years and it made me think about the long tenure of her role as our Head of State and tenure generally. I did a little research and there is a gent in Brazil, Walter Orthman who last year had tenure of 84 years ongoing in one job. He had just celebrated his 100th Birthday. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗮𝗦 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? It's never been very long, perhaps 24 months at best but I think it works out less than that, especially these last 3 years. How important is length of tenure? I think very important, to a point. The SaaS / Tech sector is very volatile. More so in recent times. Almost everyone has a short move on their CV and often times this is not the fault of the candidate. Mismanaged expectations is usually part of the problem, M&A, redundancy more so in 2023. But what causes concern is when the odd short tenure becomes a trend. 1 or 2 maybe even 3 can be explained but when there is a pattern of short tenure, that becomes a red flag to me. One of my clients, told me once that the key thing he seeks when hiring is "𝙀𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧." This has always resonated with me and is one of the questions I consider when interviewing people. Multiple short moves do not represent a well managed career sadly and often I find that this pattern often starts with a poor decision such as leaving a job that should not have been left or following the same manager - often more than once. The message I want to share is that the grass is not always greener and always consider any move carefully, especially if you have not been in your current role for long.

Have you ever had a colleague who left such a profound impact on your life that they became a topic of conversation at your family's dinner table for nearly three decades? Day 6 of my '365 Days of Thank You' series is dedicated to Doug Turner-GE, someone who has made a lasting impact not just in my professional life but in a very special personal way too. Doug holds a unique place in my family's heart because my special needs sister, Gina, asks about him every night. She fondly remembers him as her favorite of my former bosses, and our nightly conversations always include her asking how Doug is doing. “How’s Doug,” she’ll ask without fail. “Doug is doing great,” I tell her. “He’s probably on the golf course.” My connection with Doug Turner started during my time at KPMG, just before I became a partner. Doug initially tried to recruit me for GE but ended up becoming one of my biggest clients at KPMG. When I left KPMG, Doug offered me a job at GE. Our professional relationship quickly turned into a strong friendship. Doug's leadership taught me how to navigate the corporate world effectively and introduced me to valuable industry contacts. Working in-house at GE provided insights into corporate needs, and Doug's guidance was instrumental in understanding decision-making processes. Doug's expertise in managing complex tasks at GE was impressive, and he emphasized the importance of meeting deadlines and being responsive – something that I now emphasize with my own team. He also allowed me to recruit talented individuals like Donald Lippert, Eric Davalos, Gerry Amoroso, Jonathan Ponader, MAI, MRICS, Michael Powell, and Daniel Carroll, jokingly saying, "We’re talking to Joe’s extended family again," when I wanted to hire people. Doug retired from GE about a decade ago - but his influence still brightens my life every night. I'll continue to think of him every night when my sister asks about him, and I hope he and his wife, Jan, are enjoying the golf course. #DougTurner #GeneralElectric #LeadershipSkills #ThankYou #Gratitude

Friday was my last day at Ochsner. In just a few years, I worked under 4 different job titles in 3 separate departments. I learned so much and developed many great relationships along the way. I took countless opportunities for professional growth and development, giving me the chance to develop my skills and boost my resume. The decision to leave was extremely bittersweet. I am not leaving to take another job opportunity; I left to care for my family. This decision was harder than I anticipated, but it was a necessary sacrifice for the people I love most. The fear involved with relying on one income and creating a significant gap in my resume was daunting, but the confidence in my decision was driven by the amazing leaders I worked with. After my goodbyes, I felt deeply valued and empowered by their kind words and stories, especially after hearing the advice from the women in executive leadership. It fills my heart with joy and pride that I was understood in this decision and praised for it. It was always a fear of mine that I would not be taken as seriously as a professional if I did not prioritize work over family, but I was wrong. I am hoping this post reaches someone who may be debating this decision in their mind… possibly fearing the repercussions of stepping away from work temporarily. What I have learned from the amazing women that I worked with, is that you most certainly can do both, but if you have the option to take a break and prioritize your family, you won’t regret it. It will not keep you from being successful in the future. The right company will not look away from your resume because you took some time to be with your loved ones. From what I have learned from these successful female leaders, it is everyone’s dream to be able to be there for their family when they are in need. Not everyone has this opportunity, so if you are able to do it, don’t hesitate. Work will always be there, but our time with ill family members or small children is limited and precious. Taking this time requires courage, but your 80-year-old self would never regret spending more time with your family. Because of this experience, I will be back. I will work even harder than I ever had before because I will work for a company who valued me and the people who are most important to me. Thank you to Ochsner Health and to the leaders who believed in me. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that were offered to me, but I’ll never forget the kindness and compassion I have experienced in my last few weeks working for this organization. It’s not a goodbye, but a see you later!
