Everyone knows the preppy look popularized in famous runways and pieces of media like ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Heathers’—but how did this aesthetic, long associated with wealth and privilege, arise?

A profoundly simple question inspired by the life of Jane Birkin... I came across this short piece from Monocle on Jane Birkin's life so insightful; beautifully articulating the qualities that gave her such enduring appeal. Love this paragraph in particular... "It’s nearly impossible to identify a modern-day equivalent. Now is a time when actors’ or models’ looks (including the ones that they wear to step off planes) are preconceived by professional stylists and dictated by social-media trends. What will it take for someone to become an icon of the future? Perhaps the answer lies in looking far beyond social media and, like Birkin, allowing more room for the unexpected." There's the question we need to be asking far more often, not just in how we build brands, but indeed how we live life: //// Are we allowing room for the unexpected? https://lnkd.in/eaj6PWC6

what does nostalgia look like to you? so many companies are using nostalgia as a trend to sell things; this week, I'm exploring the true nostalgia of Suburb-core, a lewk that's finding itself everywhere from the tights-as-pants #trend at miu miu (and the trickle down to smaller brands) to baby tees and low rise jeans. #newsletter #weeklynewsletter

So, it turns out I didn't have a Barbie! 😯 I had a Sindy. I'm impressed with my feminist Mother's instinctive choices. Admitted, I didn't play with Sindy, preferring my bear and a monkey I rescued from a gutter (literally). My first play memory was putting together a Tinkertoy sitting on the hall carpet. The low pile allowed my stick-legged fantasy beast to stand (my bedroom had more practical linoleum). Now I think of it, I never drew or dressed people. I drew mostly plants. I dressed the dog. Sorry Skippy. My Mother made clothes for Sindy, but they were too intricate for my fingers. I don't remember seeing myself in the doll, or seeing the doll as real. I do remember sleeping with both Panda and Monkey (they didn't have names) because I thought they would be hurt if I showed favouritism. I've analysed many aspects of my youth in detail, but I have never thought much about my toy choices. Even then, my character was there. Which means that if you have children, take their toy/play choices very seriously. It might identify the perfect career very early, and save a lot of wasted time and effort fitting a square peg in a round hole. All Tinkertoy holes and pegs and stocks were round - wasn't that clever!) #barbie #toydesign #PlayIsLearning
Barbie is now queen. But for my generation, Sindy reigned supreme

Image-maker for senior-level executives and attorneys | Since 1989, I’ve helped thousands exude unique personas to wield influence.
***The Mug Shot*** Vanessa Friedman, the fashion editor and chief fashion critic at The New York Times, wrote about The Mug Shot on Friday. I am a person driven by purpose and mission, values, principles, and integrity. And I have strong, thoughtful opinions about image-making topics. Not sharing my thoughts on something as monumental as this would be cowardly. I would rather display courage to use this moment to share a professional and personal reaction to this never-before seen moment in American history: I am struck by the consequential nature of this image. People have their photo taken: - as a newborn - at the sight of the first visible tooth - every grade of school - graduations - bar mitzvah and confirmation celebrations - prom attendance - professional positioning on a company website or LinkedIn - wedding photos - photos for all manner of milestones throughout life - and the resurrection of a photo for an obituary Every photo is a reflection of what a person did. This mug shot should go down in history as a reflection of what Trump {allegedly} did that put him in front of a Fulton County sheriff’s camera. Every photo I mentioned in the list above are of moments people can be proud of and want to remember with fondness. But this mug shot: it’s all about cashing in. As a proud American, this image represents a low point in our democracy as millions of people seem to believe in this guy’s myth-making. Perhaps when people look at this mug shot, some ought to look at it and see it as a reflection of their culpability in supporting and attempting to thwart democracy. #imagemaking #imageconsultant #controversy

Thank you The Wall Street Journal love these articles! Definitely this particular one is speaking to me. Today, the Gen X look is a mature evolution of those founding principles. “In 2023 it’s a blend of practical minimalism with eclectic touches that nod back to the notion of fashion as self-expression,” said Sciacca. Fleeting trends and flimsily made fare play little part. Growing up, “Gen X trawled thrift stores…for well-made or just desirably weird clothes” to find their style voice, said New York fashion historian Jessica Glasscock. “I think engagement with utilitarian deadstock and vintage pieces [has] enabled Gen-X shoppers to crankily turn their nose up at 21st-century fast fashion.” https://lnkd.in/ejKUdqHd KReMM #brandingagency #hotelbranding #design #architecture #brandbuilding #branddesign #hospitalitybranding #experientialthinking #brand #hospitality #realestate #realestatebranding #bespokebrands #branding #identitydesign #conceptdevelopment #positioning #brandcommunications #research #uhnwi #uhnw #research #brandmarketing #digitalmarketing
