Executive Vice President Industrial Automation | Member of the Executive Committee at Schneider Electric
It was great to speak on the "Decarbonising Industry" panel at the Handelsblatt Energy Summit this week. I would like to give you some food for thoughts, based on the experience we at Schneider Electric have gained from countless customer projects around the world. There have long been countless examples of production facilities all over the world where business is not only more climate-friendly, but in most cases even more successful. And we owe this essentially to digitalisation. Transparency: Many of our customers are surprised at how easy it is to save energy, resources and therefore costs. The best way to do this is to increase data transparency in a system. If you have an overview of everything, you can start your green, digital and future-proof transformation very quickly. The technologies required to create this transparency can be implemented anywhere without interfering with existing processes. Open systems: This is a clear mandate for us manufacturers. Proprietary systems make it difficult for users to realise end-to-end digital networking. Open systems, on the other hand, make digitalisation attractive because they guarantee scalability and thus secure investments in the long term Energy crisis: To put it simply, high electricity prices are always an incentive for change. And measures that help to consume energy more efficiently are ultimately always also measures for more climate-friendly production. More incentives for the use of energy-efficient technologies would increase industry's willingness to transform – if only for financial reasons. Decarbonising industry is no longer a technical issue. https://lnkd.in/eR22aY6U #HBEnergie #LifeIsOn

No excuses!!! 66% of the CO2 emissions can be abated with existing solutions!! It's about accelerated deployment NOW of #energysaving, #energyefficiency and #renewables. Plus: according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), fossil fuel demand will peak by 2030. This means that we don't need new #fossilfuel capacity. Not only is investing in new fossil fuel capacities a NOGO for #climate reason, but does create stranded assets and does not make economic sense. #RenewablesNow

You can deploy #renewables 🍀 but need grids.. You can build electrolysers, but need demand for #hydrogen.. You can sell electric cars ⚡️ 🚙 but charging stations are required… And more… A striking finding of the updated IEA Net Zero Report is the progress achieved in #greentech. In just two years the technology available today on the market are enough to reach 66% of the global emissions reduction needed, compared with a 50% of only 2 years ago. That is quite a remarkable leap! This clearly indicates that #innovation works. It also highlighted that the deployment of massive policy and economic stimulus have a real world impact. With clean tech becoming more widely available - although the #jobs is far from being over - the attention is shifting towards deployment. And here there are several surprises as, after so much efforts to make those #energy options ready, in many places their implementation proceeds slower than what would be possible. There are many reasons for such issue - from bureaucracy to permitting up to awareness limits. But fundamentally there is an entire infrastructure and industrial ecosystem to rebuild. The pandemic has shown the limits of supply chains in place. The acceleration in clean energy demand is a massive call for scaling up #production and all associated logistics. A single bottleneck along the entire chain determines massive delays. The bottom line is that the technology readiness is a welcome #news but alone is condition “needed but not sufficient”. Making sure that such greentech becomes mainstream in the society is a new (and equally important) priority ! #investment #money #future
