September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It's an awareness month we all wish we didn't need to have. But cancer is still the number one disease-related cause of death for children – it's a cause we need to raise up and support urgently. Luckily for all of us, St. Jude is leading the charge in treatment and prevention. Unlike other facilities, St. Jude is changing how the world treats and CURES children with cancer. To raise funds to continue delivering this critical work, St. Jude is hosting a Charitybuzz auction this month full of unique items and experiences (private guided Tesla factory tour, moped signed by the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers...). I probably don't have to remind you all here how passionate I am about St. Jude. Here are some impactful ways to raise awareness: 🌟 Organize community events such as charity walks, runs, or fun fairs to raise funds and awareness. 🌟 Partner and collaborate with local businesses to set up donation drives. Encourage them to share a percentage of their sales during a particular period that goes to childhood cancer research or support. 🌟 Share real-life stories of children who have battled cancer and overcome it. Stories are motivating and can encourage others to join in the cause. This can be run as a social media campaign on your firm’s platforms. 🌟 Organize fundraisers with family, friends, colleagues, and clients. On 8 October 2023 I will be running a half marathon through the streets and royal parks of London to raise money for Young Lives Vs Cancer. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it threatens everything, for them and their family. At a time when they should be busy being children, enjoying their rollercoaster teenage years or finding their feet at uni, life becomes full of fear. Fear of treatment, but also of families being torn apart, of overwhelming money worries, mental health stretched to breaking point, of having nowhere to turn, no one to talk to. Young Lives Vs Cancer helps children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Young Lives Vs Cancer work hard to make sure each family has what they need to get through cancer. It could be a financial grant for a parent struggling to keep their child warm through their treatment or for a young person who can’t afford to get to hospital. Or helping a family stay together at one of their free Homes from Home close to the hospital where their child is having treatment. With those people who I have talked about the importance of this charity understand why I am so passionate to raise money for this cause. Young Lives Vs Cancer is a charity that is very close to my heart as it has helped my loved ones to gain the support they need during a very difficult time. Hi again friends and connections and Happy Dry July Eve. Last Tuesday I posted that I was participating in Dry July to raise funds to help people suffering from cancer. I set myself a (apparently too modest) target of $500 (AUD) for the month of July. Well, that target was passed on about 28 June, so I have had to revise my fundraising target – I now think that $1500 is achievable. With almost 2,000 connections between LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, I just need a hit rate of 10% of all of you to donate $5 (you can’t buy a drink for that anywhere), and then I’ll get to the $1,500 with room to spare. If you are donating in Euros, GB Pounds, or US Dollars, I’ll be happy with 3 (euro, GBP, USD). This is also a little bit of an experiment about the social medial algorithms. We know that posts don’t go to all our friends and connections, so improving the reach of this post is really important. A huge thankyou to the people who have already donated and also to those who have commented on and shared posts – you are putting these algorithms to work to help cancer sufferers. One final thing, in preparation for Dry July, I have abstained from alcohol this week, so I have done the hard part – breaking the habit. I’m sleeping better and my clothes are ‘not as firm’.
