ABO Wind becomes ABO Energy. Leading international renewable energy developer ABO Wind has rebranded in Northern Ireland to become ABO Energy. The company is leading NI's shift away from fossil fuels, having achieved planning approval for 375MW of renewable electricity generation and storage. Initially set up to develop onshore wind farms, the company’s focus has expanded, and its expertise has grown to include battery energy storage, solar PV and hydrogen production. Commenting on the rebrand, Patricia McGrath (MIPI), ABO Energy’s Head of Development in Northern Ireland said: “The name ABO Energy much better reflects the breadth of skills and expertise we now have. "The rebrand does not involve a change in company ownership, and our ethos remains unchanged. Everyone who deals with ABO Energy will see the same ambition, professionalism and respect they are used to from our team. “In addition to our already consented schemes, under the ABO Energy banner we are progressing a pipeline of new projects totalling over 300 MW and we expect that to grow further in the coming months. “There is a lot of work to do if we are to achieve the 2030 target of 80%; but at ABO Energy we are more than up for the challenge.” #ClimateChange #RenewableEnergy #SustainableInvestment

The surging power needs of artificial intelligence and data centers will be met primarily with renewable energy — not fossil fuels, according to the CEO of a leading solar company. The natural gas industry believes it is best positioned to fulfill the surging power demand from data centers, arguing that renewables aren’t reliable enough to power these energy-hungry projects alone.

The number of early-stage renewable energy projects entering queues around the country exceeds the availability of labor and capital needed to build them, Brent Nelson, managing director of markets and strategy at market intelligence firm Ascend Analytics, said during a Thursday webinar. Despite the large number of new renewable energy projects, prices for power purchase agreements (PPAs) continue to rise, said Anthony Boukarim, senior manager of resource planning and valuation for Ascend Analytics. Renewable energy projects that lack interconnection and permit approvals are seen as high-risk, low value investments and financiers are turning down the majority of these projects, Nelson said. EDP Renewables has been awarded three Contracts for Difference (CfD) totalling 100 MW of wind power by Italy’s GSE (Gestore Servizi Energetici). Under the contacts, EDPR will supply renewable energy to the Italian grid from three onshore wind projects in southern Italy, which are expected to be operational by 2026. EDPR said by selling renewable energy to the Italian grid for 20 years, the company was directly contributing to the ‘rapid implementation of the energy transition in Italy’, aligning with a target of reaching 80 GW of installed capacity by 2030. “The awarding of these long-term contracts reinforces EDPR’s commitment to accelerating the pace of the energy transition in Italy, a country with ample opportunities for deploying such projects,” said Roberto Pasqua, Executive Director for South and East Europe at EDP Renewables. “With an installed capacity of over 0.5 GW, EDPR will continue to work towards achieving Italy’s decarbonisation goals and driving benefits such as employment and economic growth.” EDPR added that these contracts add to the 76 others awarded in the auction, collectively adding 1 GW of clean energy to the Italian grid. 🔋☀US RENEWABLE NEWS - 1 March 2024 EDF Renewables North America has signed a PPA with Southern California Public Power Authority for part of the offtake the Bonanza project; 300MW Solar and 195MW 4-hour BESS. 🤝 125MW Solar and 65MW 4-hour BESS will be sold to Southern California Public Power Authority by December 2028. EDF plan to complete permitting by the end of 2025—however it seems they are yet to complete three permitting processes, including producing an environmental impact statement. It would seem that both parties are confident that the project will be given the go-ahead hence the signing of the 20-year PPA. 📈 It is estimated that circa 500 jobs will be created in Clark County, Nevada, during the projects construction phase. 👷♀️ #solar #energystorage #renewablejobs

It is good to see that renewable energy has developed hugely over the past few years. Wind power in the UK also made up just over a quarter of all electricity generation in 2022. By investing in renewables, and reducing our need for fossil fuels, we can become less reliant on the wholesale market, which in turn could lower our energy bills in the future and provide more consistency.
