🌴 A Brazilian-German Vision to Foster the #Sustainable #Use of #Local #Biodiversity in the #Bioeconomy The interest on novel crops from local biodiversity for sourcing biobased products raised the attention of Brazilian research institutions on the macaúba palm. For more than a decade, the Universität Hohenheim has jointly initiated research endeavours with partners from Brazil to advance the knowledge about the #macaúba #palm. 👉 In the AcroAlliance project the goal is to support the development of #Acrocomia value chains from the seed to high-value products for a global bioeconomy based on the #sustainable #use of #local #biodiversity. 🕸 Our collegue Ricardo Vargas Carpintero hereby analyses the #value #web based on contributions from Acroalliance's working packages, integrating technical, environmental and socioeconomic aspects and providing implementation strategies using a multicriteria approach. 🌊 Introducing FEASTS consortium partner S2AQUAcoLAB! 🎯 S2AQUAcoLAB is a Portuguese non-governmental, non-profit collaborative laboratory dedicated to fostering #innovation in aquaculture and bridging the gap between industry and academia. 🌍 LIFE Natural AGRO project was awarded from the LIFE Programme’s 2022 call for Standard Action Projects and is planned for five years bringing together 3 partner countries: France, Italy and Portugal. In the project NDG Natural Development Group partners with Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (FR), Università di Camerino (IT), Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (IT), Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, IP (INIAV, IP) (PT), Certiquality Srl (IT), Vitepiù (IT), Vinidea (IT) and Entopan (IT) as associated partner. 🌿 The project aims to drive European viticulture towards more efficient, sustainable, toxic-free crop protection, through reducing and even eliminating the use of xenobiotic compounds in plant protection products (PPPs). 💡The mission of the Natural Agro project is to adopt agricultural production, particularly for vines, more respectful of the environment by developing an effective and sustainable strategy to fight against parasitic diseases. 🔎 The project aims to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers by proposing a new innovative solution to the current market.

Exciting collaboration published in Videnskab.dk! 📰   We are happy to announce a successful collaboration on research dissemination at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), written by special consultant at DTU Biosustain Vanesa Sanchez-Guajardo, PhD with our senior researcher Pablo Cruz-Morales. Their article has been featured in the Danish media outlet Videnskab.dk, shedding light on a revolutionary approach to sustainable agriculture:   🧟♂️ Are zombie insects the way to farming without traditional pesticides? 🧟♀️   Just imagine if we could turn insects into 'zombie insects' to protect our crops without using harmful pesticides. This inventive research demonstrates how molecules from fungal infections can prevent insects from eating crops by putting them into a 'zombie state'. The method preserves the beneficial roles of insects in nature and is harmless to humans.   🌾 The benefits are clear: the crops win, the insects win, the environment wins, and we win—a rare win-win-win-win-win scenario😊   However, for this method to be viable, the public and policymakers must accept the use of sustainable, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture. Are we ready to take that step? 🤔   This research by Senior researcher Pablo Cruz-Morales highlights the longstanding symbiosis between fungi and plants, and how fungal molecules can be harnessed to create eco-friendly biopesticides. By preventing insects from eating crops without killing them, we can maintain a balanced ecosystem and avoid pesticide resistance.   While this promising data brings us closer to a sustainable future, we need to ensure that our biopesticides are insect-specific and safe for humans. Our guest is Iris Mota BSc, MSc, who will be presenting “Regenerative Agriculture with a focus on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants”. Regenerative agriculture (RegenAg) encompasses principles that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration in farming practices. Additionally, in RegenAg these practices must take into account economic viability and community benefits. Applying these principles to cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) has generated significant interest, driven not only by rising demand but also by the potential for integrated production systems. Regenerative methods nurture healthier soil microbiomes, enhancing nutrient availability and plant resilience. This approach not only promotes a more sustainable agriculture but also has the potential to enhance the production of secondary metabolites and oils in MAPs due to plant interactions with a thriving soil microbiome. By emphasizing ecological balance and soil vitality, regenerative agriculture presents a promising avenue for cultivating these valuable plants while supporting environmental well-being. Iris Mota, a Portuguese Plant Biologist with a Master’s in Pharmacy and Chemistry of Plant Natural Products, is a professional with diverse expertise. Having extensively worked in essential oil distilleries across Portugal, Angola, Italy, and Peru, Iris evaluated value chains and critical points to achieve an optimized production of oils. In parallel, she has also worked as an agronomist, aiding farms transitioning to regenerative agriculture. Her hands-on experience spans nearly 100 farms between 2021 and 2023, learning and teaching farmers how to evaluate their soil and what are other methods of observing a farm. Her passion for MAPs and regenerative agriculture led her to publish a scientific article exploring mycorrhizae soil fungi's influence on essential oil production, its effect on the chemical profile, and biomass production. Iris has a deep commitment to studying and promoting regenerative agriculture while recognizing its potential in optimizing the cultivation of medicinal plants while prioritizing ecological balance and sustainability.
