We're thrilled to announce the official launch today of EIC Project BIGALPS, a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at transforming the landscape of soil stabilization! Our Partners: •EPFL - Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne •INRAE - National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment •Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Coordinator) Project Budget: Nearly 3 million Euros What is BIGALPS all about? BIGALPS is a project funded via European Innovation Council (GA Number 101113081) and SERI that is on a mission to revolutionize the field of soil stabilization. We're introducing an innovative bio-technology for soil treatment that offers a complete environmentally friendly solution. This technology has the incredible capacity to tackle some of the most critical soil stability issues, including landslides and erosion. What is EIC? EIC Transition funds ERC-Adv born innovations that go beyond the experimental proof of principle in laboratory to support both: the maturation and validation of a novel technology in the lab and in relevant application environments. In BIGALPS the technology of biocementation developed during BIOGEOS (GA No. 788587) goes European thanks to our ambitious consortium. Bio-cementation: At the heart of our project is the pioneering soil improvement technique known as bio-cementation. This technique leverages the metabolic activity of microorganisms to produce calcium carbonate, which binds soil particles together, creating a solid foundation. Our Goal: Our primary objective is to mature and validate this groundbreaking technology. We aim to make it fully compatible with real-world environments, in line with existing norms and industry standards. Join us on this incredible journey towards a greener, more stable future for our soil and the environment. Together, we can make a lasting impact! https://lnkd.in/dUumSzRz Stay tuned for updates on our exciting progress! #BIGALPS #SoilStabilization #Innovation #EPFL #INRAE

WE PRESENTED OUR NEWEST FINDINGS IN SPAIN At the end of the year 2023, The Sustainable Development Materials Conference (MATSUS23) was held in Torremolinos, Spain. This event was established with the goal of creating a platform to discuss and share knowledge and tools of advanced materials in the science and technology area. It is indisputable that the shift to sustainability is a goal that binds together our whole society and therefore every event like this is extremely important and stimulating. INO-HUB Energy was represented by our partners, Associate Professor Almáši and Dr. Király from Univerzita 'Pavla Jozefa Šafárika' v Košiciach. They presented their findings in the synthesis, characterization, and advancement of organic electrolytes for redox flow batteries. Their research was primarily focused on examining viologens with different alkyl chains and investigating the impact of reaction conditions on the costs of the reactions. We thoroughly appreciated the well-organized nature of the conference as well as the stimulating discussions held with experts from various interesting fields of material research. And we believe that common discussions and newly acquired contacts can jointly move us forward toward a more sustainable tomorrow! #inohubenergy #conference #spain #sustainable #university #technology #future

Head of Business Area Sustainable Chemistry bei Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB
Yet another Hub? 🤔 That was my first thought when reading the EC's Communication on "Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU" which states in Action 2: "establishing an EU Biotech Hub, an operational tool for biotech companies to navigate through the regulatory framework and identify support to scale up". Yesterday I was given the opportunity to represent Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB and IBISBA at a workshop organized by the EC's Directorate General GROW to discuss the Communication and respective actions 🤓 Some key points for me were 👉 The Biotech Hub would largely build on existing infrastructures, e.g. IBISBA, Pilots4U, or existing regional clusters, e.g. CLIB - Cluster Industrielle Biotechnologie. A respective mapping of European activities has been started. 👉 Better access and transferability of regional funding could help companies to get the support they need from e.g. pilot facilities, although perhaps located somewhere else. Briefly stated, maybe only remains my wishful thinking. 👉 Bio-based content (or rather renewable carbon content?!) requirements for certain product categories could stimulate market demand, but need to be seen in the perspective with other regulations (e.g. plastic waste regulation) 👉 It was not just me whining about the costs of, not building, but maintaining large research infrastructures. That point got noted 🤞 🙏 YES, there is still the plan to have an updated Bioeconomy Strategy in 2025 Thank you for the opportunity! #biotechnology #bioeconomy #biomanufacturing

Introducing the members of the European Biosolutions Coalition: Federchimica Assobiotec 🇮🇹 The Italian Association for the Development of Biotechnology, Assobiotec represents beyond 120 companies and science and technology parks operating in healthcare and bioeconomy which includes agriculture, industry, and environment. Assobiotec was first established in 1986 as part of Federchimica, the Italian Federation of the Chemical Industry. Its mission is to encourage and support Biotech innovation. 🤝 Why did Assobiotec join the European Biosolutions Coalition? Vice-President, Mrs. Elena Sgaravatti puts it like this: "Our membership to the newly-born European Biosolution Coalition is intended to be a contribution that the National Association of Italian Biotechnology also makes to bring down the many cultural and regulatory barriers that are leaving Europe on the margins of a global revolution: the biorevolution, on which building the future of the Planet." Did you know? ♻️ In 2017 the Italian Government promoted the development of a National Strategy for the Bioeconomy (BIT), updated in 2019 (BIT II) to interconnect the pillars of the national bioeconomy more efficiently: the production of renewable biological resources, their conversion into valuable food/feed, biobased products and bioenergy, and the transformation and valorisation of organic waste streams. 💶 In 2022, the set of activities connected to the bioeconomy in Italy, of which biotechnology is the driver of innovation, generated a production value of 415.3 billion euros, employing around two million people. The Italian bioeconomy accounts for 11% of the total value of production, a clear increase compared to 9.9% in 2019. 🔬 The centrality of biotechnology as a driver for the development and for the innovation of the entire country has been more and more recognised by the Italian Government. The Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy is working on a National strategy for the development of biotechnology. Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy has recently kicked off a working table dedicated to the internationalization of the biotech sector.
