LIS Fellow & Artist @ London Museum of Water & Steam Renaissance Woman,Physicist,Artist. Award winning pollution absorbing sculptures.Inspired by Nature & Symbiocene & The Industrial Sublime #belikewater
Pollution takes many forms…. consumption of materials…. this is a working sculpture in plastics, metals and an old brake pad….against a black piece of fabric….all materials I have been collecting for many years…. 14 years ago I started working with plastics, new and discarded as part of an exhibition at Hove Museum, called ‘Precious’ … it allowed me to use the optics from my physics research… 6 years after, as part of a residency for Milan Design Week, I created an installation of butterflies and leaves using dichroics to draw attention to the our forgotten awe of nature and unsustainable practices in fashion…. Not long after i started to work with ceramics that could absorb pollution….Innovation has always been at the heart of my practise…. As part of a new series of works for The London Water & Steam Museum, based on industrialisation, water, steam, conservation, pollution, nature and our place in it all, I am returning to half made pieces and ideas i have had for years….be adding waste water bottles , or collected fallen objects from nature or parts of discarded machines to create new sculptures… I keep being drawn to reflections….Just like Narcissus who fell in love with his…. A sustainable art practise is just a tool for creating a complex narrative of new stories from our ancient ones….and we are at our most creative when we have a limited number of units from which to create… its imagination and intuition which helps us find the dots we can often feel but which then just as quickly allude us…. this process creates the same dopamine highs we get from screens…. #museumshow #soloexhibitions #exhibition #newworks #sustaiinable #sustainablefashion #plasticpollution #airpollution #sculpture #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #coincidenceofopposites #symbiocene #narcissus #waterconservation #natureconservation #artlovers #digitaldetox #analogueart

The role of the artist is not just to create beauty, but to provoke thought and dialogue, challenging societal norms and encouraging a collective reimagining of our relationship with the environment. The impact of art is such that its message can create a positive impact on humanity and the Earth. I recently came across an eye-opening article on the eco-friendly art movement that is inspiring as well as thought-provoking in multiple respects. Xavier Veilhan, the renowned French artist and sailing enthusiast, sought alternatives to air travel and found the answer in an environment-friendly sailboat. His goals were twofold: to radically reduce his carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation of his artwork. Veilhan and his team embarked on a voyage from Germany to Stockholm, tackling insurance hurdles and re-imagining sustainable packaging solutions along the way. His journey is an excellent example of how powerful art is as a means of communication and transformation. I am captivated by the role of sustainable transportation practices in the arts because they beautifully intertwine movement and creativity, illustrating how everyday choices can reflect broader environmental values. One should not underestimate the inspiration that an artistic expression brings. Likewise, with innovative approaches, artists have the potential to ignite progressive social change by challenging norms and inspiring collective action. What are your thoughts on how artists can engage in sustainable art practices? https://lnkd.in/d9q-U8uH

Is the art trade capable of reshaping its practices toward sustainability? Victoria Siddall, a seasoned voice in the art world, fervently believes so. The same two decades that have heightened our awareness of climate catastrophe have also seen the art market balloon to a $65 billion behemoth. This growth, driven by affluent collectors and an endless merry-go-round of fairs, paradoxically exposes the industry to sustainability critiques. Siddall's initiative with Murmur and the Gallery Climate Coalition represents a pivotal moment. As Siddall’s work illustrates, the path forward isn't just about reducing carbon emissions or offsetting travel footprints; it’s about instigating a systemic shift that interweaves sustainability into the very fabric of the art world. Change may be slow, but the momentum is undeniable, echoing across biennials, auction houses, and every corner of this traditionally insular industry. The onus is on each stakeholder, from the galleries that present art to the collectors who invest in it, to embrace these initiatives with both diligence and creativity.

Sharing my thoughts on the new plastic caps in Resumé.

♻️ #Creating art from recycled materials is not only a creative endeavor but also a meaningful contribution to a more #sustainable world. By repurposing discarded items, artists can transform everyday objects into captivating masterpieces that carry a powerful message about #environmental consciousness. 🦿 The process of crafting art from #recycling materials often involves embracing the inherent textures, colors, and shapes of discarded items. Metal scraps, old newspapers, #bottle caps, and discarded fabrics become the building blocks of innovative sculptures, intricate #mosaics, and vibrant collages. These materials, once destined for landfills, gain new life as they are woven together to tell stories of renewal and #transformation. 🎨 Artists who work with recycled materials often highlight the importance of #reducing waste and reimagining the potential of discarded objects. Through their creations, they encourage viewers to see beyond the surface and consider the environmental impact of their own #consumption habits. Such art serves as a visual reminder of the beauty that can arise from embracing sustainable #practices and thinking outside the #conventional boundaries of artistic mediums.

Sustainability the ultimate buzzkill? Think again! * What role does pleasure and excitement and thrill-seeking play in encouraging people to make more sustainable choices? * How might you too think like a visionary designer when it comes to your own practice? * How might we establish a new design language, a new exciting aesthetic for the post-carbon age? Picture this: A chance encounter with an electric motorbike in the window of an east London pop-up store. What caught my eye? Not just that it looked like a new fangled electric device, but the promise it held - of a sustainable future brimming with excitement, a far cry from the dreary doom-and-gloom narrative associated with eco-consciousness. Behind this game-changing thinking? STEFAN YTTERBORN, the visionary Swedish designer. Stefan's resume boasts the founding of POC, a powerhouse in winter sports gear since 2004, and later, CAKE – ridecake.com, a hot ticket in the electric motorcycle scene, before his newest studio venture, To Be . #TheGreatTransition, airs next Monday, April 29th, at 5 pm UK , noon EST. (link below) where with my co-host, Mark Bjornsgaard, we'll be exploring the ins and outs of the scramble towards a post-fossil carbon world. Please join us and please share this post, this is going to be a great show! https://lnkd.in/eEH6CFuA Wiktor Skoog in particular and Nils Leonard Bill Scott David Patton you'll be keen to see this one, I am sure you remember our love of POC from the Volvo days... #SustainableInnovation #Ecodesign #SustainableDesign
