Can an inspirational cliché written in cursive reverse The Dutch Government’s decision to increase taxes on plant-based alternatives to milk? Probably not. But it’s worth a try…Last week, the nearly 200% increase in the “Lemonade Tax” was voted in despite the efforts of Misty E. Mason and 40 000 other citizens plus ProVeg Nederland, Alpro, NGOs, The IkLobby and yours truly, who signed and supported her petition to stop it. Now, if you’re more than slightly confused why plant-based alternatives to milk are considered “lemonade” and subject to the tax, whilst cow’s milk isn’t, well, join the club… And if that confusion now has you questioning the logic of taxing products with a generally lower climate impact than milk, well, you can join that club too… And, as a valued club member, you should also know that despite this setback we will continue asking these questions and fighting to level the playing field for plant-based dairy alternatives. So to all policy makers out there, we’ll talk soon, yeah?

Chocolate milk cackles heartily at your LinkedIn post (and your pain) Oatly. Meanwhile, Mineral water doesn’t even recognize themselves anymore…

Maybe talk about glycemic load of your product - which is almost as bad aa coke, hence the tax is completely justified. Your product is unhealthy

Okay, but what’s with the whale?

Show me the science that can convince me oat is better than milk when it comes to human health. There are so many other places you could start if you want to create a better world than milk. A cow on grass is not the issue. Inability to see the broader picture is.

It makes perfect sense to me. You get oat milk out of lemons and thus it should be taxed accordingly. /s Who exactly gets to decide the milk is lemonade? I don't put lemonade in my tea. Oat milk isn't lemonade. It doesn't come from lemons. Nor do any other dairy milk alternatives!

I would wear the heck out of a “Dit is geen limonade” sweatshirt or t-shirt. Idk how I would affect change in the Dutch government while I’m in Seattle, but by golly, I’d follow Oatly into battle!

What a crazy world we are living in. It just goes to show how disconnected policy makers can be who are the one hand setting targets to reduce their climate footprint and recognising the need to reduce meat and dairy consumption to achieve this….and the on the other hand tax plant based drinks because they are considered ‘lemonade’
