Being an Ocean Ally is for everyone! From taking a small action to show your solidarity and support for underrepresented groups, to uplifting those whose voices often go unheard, there are many ways to be an Ocean Ally. What is Allyship? Allyship is the ongoing practice of recognizing your privileges and working to build equitable relationships based on trust and accountability among individuals or groups of underrepresented individuals. Why is being an ally so important? By being an ally, you become a champion for diversity and inclusion, support creating a safe and welcoming space for all, and help improve the state of DEI&A in our ocean community. What can you do to foster allyship? Be open-minded, treat others with kindness, and respect, be willing to speak up, educate and be an ally for underrepresented individuals or groups in the face of discrimination (when safe to do so), educate yourself, and be willing to confront your own privileges, prejudices and biases, even if it is uncomfortable to do so. #Allyship #DEIA #Oceans #OceanAllies

Peace means societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence. In a social sense, peace is commonly used to mean a lack of conflict (such as war) and freedom from fear of violence between individuals or groups.

Today we recognize the UN's International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples Day. The theme for 2023 is youth. I celebrate young Indigenous Peoples and their role in creating change and shaping the future. There are serious challenges Indigenous Peoples face today. Their lands and resources are threatened, and their rights are undermined. They are consistently vulnerable to marginalization and exclusion. I acknowledge young Indigenous Peoples and those of all ages who are helping to fight back. As people post up images and words for #IndigenousPeoplesDay, may folks also reflect on the land they are on - beyond #LandAcknowledgement. Reflect on whether they exemplify stewardship of this land, whether they are part of the violence inflicted on this land (figuratively and literally), whether they support the continued colonization and violence through what they support and don't support, their behaviours, and their performativity on days like today. What are you genuinely and authentically doing in regards to #TruthAndReconciliation and #CallsForJustice re: #MMIWG? Having access to Indigenous people you call colleagues, friends, etc... is superficial until your actions speak. Hope people spend time today, and every day, to support Indigenous led events, businesses, and movements. Organizations who exemplify performative DEI, should cross the threshold into Justice. #Indigenous #FirstNations #Metis #Inuit #Allyship #Colonization #Support #Stewarship #Landback #StolenLand #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #Justice

As a powerful force that bridges across differences, culture brings people together, and thus underpins social cohesion, peace and security. Notwithstanding this unifying function, the past years have witnessed a growing instrumentalization of culture for divisive purposes. This negative exploitation of culture has not only contributed to more protracted crises and relapses into conflict, but also the denial of human rights, including cultural rights. Culture is integral to who we are and where we come from. From heritage to creative expression, culture contributes to identity, belonging and meaning. As a resource for community vitality, well being and expression, it shapes peaceful societies through the recognition of and respect for the diversity of cultures and freedom of expression that stands to creat positive peaceful coexistence..,,,,🥰🌿😍🫶 #youth4peace #buildingpeacethroughempowerment #FacilitatingYouthDevelopment #nothing4theyoutwithouttheyouth

In Belize, solidarity culture looks something like this. Everybody concern about fair treatment, but very few show up. Even when organizations meet in workshops and the state organize people and say we leave no one behind, the people in the room remain quiet. Even when fabulous statements are made at the UN or the OAS, the political representative returns home to do nothing. Even when organizations meet and verbally agree a problem needs to be fixed, they walk out the room and forget the collective informal agreement. We make no statements, that acknowledge the marginalised in the environmental sector, among unions, in the private sector, among indigenious groups, older persons or in disability spaces because our diversity of mandates do not permit. I argue that we have an obligation to amplify the needs of the marginalised if we believe in a people centred approach to our citizenship and development. I argue that every sector has interrelated issues that are structural or systemic. I argue that failure to acknowledge the marginalised is complicity by omission, inaction and indifference to uphold systems of oppression. Our mindset of what about me, needs to change to what about us. Anything less is unforgiveable. The struggle continues!
