Director of UTEP Edge at the The University of Texas at El Paso, Promoting High-Impact Practices and Student Success Initiatives
When asked by faculty and staff what an Edge Experience is, I refer to the HIP characteristics. An Edge Experience is substantive engagement that includes having our students reflect on and apply their learning. It involves constructive, regular feedback to help the student assess their learning. It doesn't mean that every experience involves all HIP components. However, careful consideration should be taken to determine what characteristics work best with each activity and student population. Message me if you have any questions. #UTEPEdge
What makes an Edge Experience impactful in student success and engagement? Intentional engagement in and outside of the classroom that include: • Appropriately high performance expectations • Timely and frequent feedback • Significant investment of time and effort • Interactions with peers and faculty • Experiences with people and circumstances different from their own • Real-world application • Reflection • Public demonstration of competence In selecting UTEP Edge Experiences, faculty and staff considered engaged learning experiences that encompass these key elements of high-impact practices as identified by Kuh and O’Donnell (2013). Being from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institute may indicate that an individual was successful academically or had access to quality education, but it does not necessarily guarantee present proficiency or success in practical tasks or endeavors. Success in the real world depends on a combination of factors including practical skills, experience, adaptability, and continuous learning. Someone from a prestigious institute may indeed have a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, but their ability to apply that knowledge effectively in real-world situations may vary. Conversely, individuals from less prestigious institutions or without formal education may excel based on their practical experience, problem-solving abilities, and determination. Ultimately, one's current capabilities and competence should be evaluated based on their actual performance, achievements, and demonstrated skills rather than solely on their educational background. Share your thoughts.

Surely any skill, however & wherever it is gained, has to be of value whenever it is applied?
Does anyone else share my frustration with how we demean the transferable skills that our students develop by labelling them as “soft skills”?

Denise Inwood is MD at BlueSky, Winner of Bett 2019 Award & COBIS Supporting Member of the Year Award
'Time, like most of the resources in our modern education system, can be thin on the ground.' 'That matters when it comes to professional development. We all know that PD makes a huge difference to the professional growth of education professionals and the quality of teaching, but the perception is that it needs time – and resources – and can feel like one of a number of competing demands on already heavy workloads. How, then, can we make professional development as time efficient as possible?' School Support Partner | Connects Educators | Brain-Based Approach | Facilitator | Early Career Transition Partner
Are you an Instructional Leader with Early Career Teachers or thinking of recruiting soon? If so, I'm here to be your supportive human resource 🌿 The support of our Early Career Teachers and their Mentors isn't a nice to have, it's a MUST have, and alongside this we need to ensure there is depth to the support we all say is essential. ECT's come to the profession with energy, excitement, and ready to learn, however unfortunately for so many the reality of a classroom key and 25-30 faces to teach holistically is quite the feat. I've been gathering data on the needs and wants of our ECT's, and face to face, because it's here I can truly HEAR them. It's in these moments sadly I WATCH the tears fall, I FEEL their hearts heavy with burden, confusion, and guilt. All they want is to be the best version of themselves personally and professionally. We say we want retention of teachers and we say we need more teachers. Well, part of the intrinsic motivation needs to start with our ECT's knowing that real support is provided. We need to do what we say much better. The first 5 years are critical! 🍃 I can provide ways of working in schools that are created in context and has depth that supports the whole school with retention of a well teacher. 🍃 I can provide professional development that dives into classroom and school life that supports with clarity, softly, and quality over quantity. 🍃 I can provide professional development that supports the rigour of understanding self and others from a neuroscience perspective to support longevity in the profession. 🍃 I can provide 1-1 and 1-2 support for ECT's and their Mentors.

Peer learning programs benefit students, Peer Skills Advisors, and the university, but they can be tricky to implement and grow in practice. See how it's done in this 5-year overview of Edith Cowan University's successful “just-in-time, just-for-me” PSA program. What are the keys to their success? 🗝 Hiring high-achieving students who normally have previous experience in customer service or client engagement. 🗝 Supporting PSAs through structured training, and physically co-locating them beside the Learning Advisers for ongoing mentoring. 🗝 Being responsive to changes in use and student demand, based on data and feedback from PSAs. 🗝 Support from the university library and teaching staff to promote the program to students.
