NOVA Parks is happy to announce the addition of an all-electric Chevy Bolt to our fleet (pictured with Executive Director Paul Gilbert). NOVA Parks has also recently added electric mowers and other equipment to maintain parkland. With over 80% of the agency's 12,380 acres in forests, NOVA Parks' lands absorb nearly 10,000 metric tons of carbon every year. This natural area creates the lungs of our region, absorbing carbon and releasing oxygen. The environment is a central theme of NOVA Parks’ 2023-2027 Strategic Plan. Do you live within a 10-minute walk from a park? During heatwaves, parks function as natural cooling centers. They offer equitable access to spaces that can be as much as 20 degrees cooler than neighboring streets. Without a nearby park, you may find yourself on a literal heat island — an urban area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas — and at an increased risk of living in poor air quality and limited recreational opportunities. We recently worked with Lancashire Wildlife Trust to create a video which explains the process of Peat bog rewetting. Peat bogs absorb and reduce carbon in the atmosphere (which is a good thing for planet earth), and the process of rewetting them is quite complicated (hence the explanatory video).
