A donation of 85 acres of forests and fields in the Leesburg area, will become NOVA Parks’ Cattail Regional Park. The donation by Henry Harris, whose family has been stewards of the property for generations, made this addition to the regional park agency possible and saves the property from future development. Located at the corner of Edwards Ferry Road and Battlefield Parkway, the Cattail property has several unique claims to history and rare environmental features. Future plans for the property include a trail network and interpretive signs about its unique features, as well as an entrance and parking once it is open to the public. https://lnkd.in/duevjS7p #novaparks #landconservation #loudouncounty

What appears to be a professional lobby NIMBY group is opposing the Irvine Co's Orange Heights development of 1,100 homes. This development was approved in 2005 for many more homes. Since then the Irvine Co donated 6,000 acres to open space, downsized the project, paid to build hiking trails, roads besides other improvements. The alleged lobby group states it's a wildlife sanctuary in a wildfire area with tons of traffic. It's clearly impossible to be all three at once. There are already homes right there. They also state it's Native American land. So is all of SoCal and the US. Will they tear down their own home, move and donate the land to Native Americans? Of course not because they're hypocrites. On top of this if you comment about the issue they will call you "Miss pronouns!" "all your comments are incorrect" "everyone in real estate is a SCUMBAG" blah blah childish bullying. I wonder who is behind the professional lobby group. They haven't posted disclaimers. This is just another example of NIMBYism, i.e Not In My BackYard. This is why we have a housing and homeless crisis in California. These people have a home and don't want anyone else to have a home. They'd prefer to yell at homeless people or people struggling with rent. California has not built enough housing in last 50 years because of NIMBYism. They've stalled building so long that now land prices are crazy so they can only build more expensive new properties. If they were allowed to build last 50 years, there would be plenty of older cheaper housing. Every unit built helps the housing crisis. CAN A WALL BECOME A CHOICE . . . NOT A BARRIER? The wall was an overlooked 110-year-old building, neglected for 50 years. Its roof and much of its third floor had been destroyed. Finally, the building, located in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, was condemned by the city of Philadelphia. The local newspaper shouted for attention about the loss! Along with a few others, I fought to save the building by producing dozens of letters followed by phone calls. The owner of the building retaliated with an ultimatum: “To halt the demolition, raise $4800 in 48 hours!” At the zero hour we met the challenge, only to face a harsher hurdle: Raise the necessary money to build the walls, install a new roof, and renovate the building. “It’s not what happens to you that matters. It’s what you do about it.” - Nido Qubein, “ATTITUDE The Remarkable Power of Optimism” The challenge was harsh: Not only were we novice fundraisers but also We were recent newcomers from outside Philadelphia with few local contacts. In the 1960s we faced another hurdle: This accepted belief reigned: “There is nothing historic in Chestnut Hill.” Only monumental buildings in Philadelphia such as Independence Hall qualified as “historic.” We gained time enough to: Attract key support and raise the required money. Today, the three-story stone building stands as a landmark. Our actions gave birth to the Chestnut Hill Historical Society, now known as the Chestnut Hill Conservancy. Today the Conservancy ‘s actions meet ever-present challenges: It reaches out to save stone walls in Chestnut Hill and beyond into neighboring communities. #thriving #wellbeing #optimism #attitude

You may have heard that the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has opened submissions on its Three-Year Plan (2024 – 2027) which proposes to cut its current funding of $120,000 per year to Te Mata Park Trust. This is a third of our annual funding, the loss of which could have very real consequences, including the possibility that health and safety issues (brought about by under-funded maintenance) could lead to Park closures. Cutting a third of our operating budget could put Te Mata Park Trust in an untenable position; fail to protect the region’s most important recreational, historical and cultural taonga; and undermine all the investment and volunteer time that has gone into the Park in recent years. We know that times are tough, and budgets are stretched, but if you believe that the Park should continue to be part-funded by HBRC, please have your say and make a submission. With the community’s support we hope to influence HBRC to continue to fund Te Mata Park Trust and ensure the Park is protected and enhanced for future generations. If you would like to make a submission to HBRC to support the retention of Te Mata Park’s funding, please go to the Protect the Peak page on the Te Mata Park website where we have summarised some useful information to assist you. To make the process easier, we have prepared some text that you might like to use in your submission. Thank you for supporting Te Mata Park. #protectthepeak https://lnkd.in/gX57wYry

Here's the scoop: when a storm hits an island, it can wreak havoc on the landscape, stripping away soil and vegetation and leaving behind a barren wasteland. You see, mangroves have these incredible roots that act like natural sponges, trapping sediment and building up soil over time. So when a storm comes through and wipes out everything in its path, mangroves step in to stabilize the shoreline, prevent erosion, and kickstart the process of island restoration. Mangroves are also the ultimate matchmakers for marine life. Their tangled roots provide the perfect nursery habitat for all sorts of critters, from fish to crabs to birds. So not only do mangroves help rebuild the island itself, but they also create a thriving ecosystem that supports biodiversity and sustains local communities. #blueatlasproject #fyp #nonprofit #DisasterRelief #donate #Bahamas #RefugeesWelcome #mangroves

Five Great Battlefields, Six Crucial Restoration Projects To restore land and history at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Slaughter Pen Farm, Lookout Mountain, and New Market Heights, we must raise $287,000. These six battlefield tracts have been saved from the bulldozers, the commercial developers, the billion-dollar tech companies — thanks to the support of Trust donors and partners. It’s simply not enough to buy the land and declare “Victory! ... Battlefield saved!” That’s only half the battle. In many instances, the Trust is required to restore the land before it can be transferred to our nonprofit or government partners. We need your help to finish the job and restore these battlefields. https://lnkd.in/eQ2acV57 #gettysburg #coldharbor #slaughterpenfarm #newmarketheights #lookoutmountain #restoration

SAVANNAH TREE FOUNDATION PROTECTS AND GROWS CHATHAM COUNTY’S URBAN FOREST THROUGH TREE PLANTING, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND ADVOCACY Trees are one of Chatham County’s most treasured natural resources. Beyond their beauty and cultural significance, the impacts of trees are far-reaching and compounding, spanning from economic benefits to health improvements to climate change resilience. Trees are woven into almost every aspect of our lives. While it is easy to take our live oaks and magnolias for granted, our trees are facing an increasing number of natural and man-made threats. Sprawling construction, increased severe weather, encroaching salt water levels, and a lack of funding for proper maintenance all contribute to tree loss in our region. If we are to continue enjoying the beauty and benefits of our trees, we must protect the trees we have and plant the trees of tomorrow. Properly cared for, our urban forest will create a safer and healthier community. Our trees will shape our future. Donate Today to help us launch Savannah's first Community Tree Nursery to help preserve and safeguard our heritage! https://lnkd.in/eivvPR5U

In the midst of the most densely urbanized state in the nation, Teaneck Creek's restoration is a reaffirmation of our shared values: community, connection, creation, and compassion. Our wetland restoration project created 20 acres of new, critically needed freshwater wetlands. Our wetland is vital because it's a connection hub for wildlife and people: it's a stopping refuge for the long migration of feathered friends and the last phase of Teaneck residents' daily commute. Our park is a place for the community to come together - to embrace art, culture, and history. Teaneck Creek is also where we come to be rejuvenated so we have the capacity to keep caring - to keep doing the work of creating more good in this world. Teaneck Creek's restoration allows us more opportunity locally to consider all the world: where will this water in the wetland flow next? The flying squirrel in the tree has ancestors going back how many years in this wetland? Did its forebears sail over the heads of the Lenape when they lived near what is now Fycke Lane? The languages murmured on the trails, come from all corners of the world and make our niche richer for it. We have so much to learn on this journey - together - from Nature. We're proud to continue the critical work of conservation and education -- no matter where they live or what their age. Nature has something for all us.. #givingtuesday #givingtuesday2023 #nonprofit #charity #donations #membersupported #community #urban #wildlife #environmentaleducation #TCCgivingTuesday

For this week’s #20pointsofimpact, we head north to Fort Collins for the Timberline development site. In 2020, Bohemian Foundation donated 23 acres of land to ULC. Alongside Elevation Community Land Trust, the land will be developed to have approximately 460 mixed-income units, including for-rent apartments and for-sale permanently affordable townhomes. Once the townhomes are built, Elevation Community Land Trust will keep the homes under a 99-year ground lease to ensure permanent affordability. Timberline is almost entirely surrounded by the lush, biodiverse City of Fort Collins Natural Areas, providing ULC with an important opportunity for placemaking by integrating the surrounding landscape into the development. There will be multiple, easily accessible green spaces in the development, as well as new trails that connect to existing ones, and opportunities for using community spaces to facilitate environmental education. The attention to sustainable development at the site, including using renewable energy resources and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, are especially important with respect to the surrounding natural resources. #environmentalsustainability

Dear Friends and Family, I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. As you may know, I’m a Community Council member for Placer Land Trust, and I feel really good about the global impacts we are making by protecting land here in Placer County! Together with our members, we’ve protected, and are caring for, nearly 19,000 acres of natural and agricultural lands so far. But unfortunately, land conservation is not keeping up with the pace of growing threats to our lands, waters, wildlife, and ways of life. Especially here in Placer County, one of the fastest growing counties in the State. That’s why we’ve set an ambitious goal to reach 25,000 permanently protected acres by 2030! Every piece of land conserved means less carbon dioxide in the air we breathe, healthier soil for our crops, and cleaner water from our taps. Placer Land Trust preserves also provide vital habitat for plants and wildlife, and many create outdoor recreation opportunities for us all to enjoy. That’s why I hope you’ll join me in supporting Placer Land Trust this Big Day of Giving. Your donation of any size will not only help protect more vital land, but it will also make you a Placer Land Trust member, or will extend your membership for a full year. Why is Big Day of Giving the best day to invest in our future? The simple answer is your donation to Placer Land Trust goes further on this day - the first $80,000 is DOUBLED by a matching fund, thanks to generous members! And each gift — no matter the size — can make us eligible for additional cash prizes. But just as important, May 2 offers a very special way to foster community as our region unites to support the many nonprofits that help us all thrive in the good times and during our more challenging days. Show the region how much you value protected land by supporting Placer Land Trust this Big Day of Giving! Give today through May 2 at: https://lnkd.in/gR4CB6Ph All major credit cards are accepted, and gifts made through a Golden 1 Credit Union debit/credit card earn additional funds for Placer Land Trust. Tell a friend--the more people protecting our natural wonders, the better! Share this email, or our social media posts. Find us on Facebook and Instagram @placerlandtrust, and SPREAD THE WORD! Please join me in making a personal donation to Placer Land Trust during Big Day of Giving. Together, we can save the land we love, strengthen our community, and create a healthier planet! Drew
