“National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and Federal Action Plan Launch” The White House released a new National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, updating the federal approach to the issue for the first time in more than a decade and launching a federal action plan with more 200 steps that the Biden administration hopes to take over the next three years, emphasizing priorities like health equity. The new plan is one of several health care initiatives announced by the administration in the runup to the 2024 election, including announcing new funding. The Northwest Native American Research Center for Health (NW NARCH) at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) is offering a training program in applied biostatistics and data science. This program is geared toward American Indian and Alaska Native students and professionals who are interested in building their quantitative skills. This track will begin in June 2024 during the 2024 Summer Research Training Institute. The training program includes intensive courses offered in person in Portland, Oregon, June 2024 and June 2025; regular virtual seminars throughout the year; and a mentored capstone project on a topic of trainees’ choice, which will be completed over the two-year training period. Travel costs for trainees will be covered by NARCH. We are asking prospective applicants to apply, or express their intent to apply, by April 15, 2024. T his intensive research training program is designed for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) health professionals and students interested in tribal health. Each week offers different, short courses that emphasize practical skill-building in research, program evaluation, and implementation.
