However, when the sun is high in the sky during the day and at night, contrails take on a different role, contributing to a #warming effect. Imagine airplanes powered only by energy from the sun, some so light they can be launched from the ground by hand, others gathered in giant “parking lots” in the stratosphere. Those are the types of aircraft being developed now that are bringing the dream of solar-powered flight closer to reality, with planes that act very differently from the jetliners of today. Solar-powered planes won’t be flying people to their next vacation spot anytime soon. But these prototypes, most of which operate without humans, could lead to new alternatives for aerial surveillance on high-risk missions and emergency telecommunications in disaster zones. Very interesting to see how the support to a green transformation of aviation in the US will be if Trump is (re-)elected. This remark is probably a good indicator of how he looks at the subject: Trump: All they know is electric. They want electric planes. What happens if the sun isn't shining while you're up in the air? Therefore, it is increasingly crucial for Europe to actively seek out new environmentally friendly solutions. This encompasses a wide range of innovations, from sustainable Power-to-X fuels to electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. There is a great article in the March/April edition of RotorPro magazine from the U.S, on different States adopting different rules and regulations to integrate RPAS operations into their airspace. It is also relevant to the situation here in New Zealand where local councils have different strategies around RPAS operations within their geographical areas. Even as I wrote this post I received an email asking for my advice on flying from and around council roads and footpaths. I have highlighted the 3 points in the article that could also be implemented here, item 2. is also relevant to the current situation surrounding Helicopter and Ag ops in various council areas around the country. Whatever the situation is, the main piece of advice is to communicate your plans to the local authority and be clear and concise on what you want to achieve. Show how you are going to mitigate the risks in different scenarios, make sure you approach any meeting professionally and take in any advice or guidance that is offered so you can successfully fly your mission. Shakespeare had a great saying, "Nothing is ever good or bad, but thinking makes it so" Simply put, don't go into the situation thinking that the local entity is bad and their only aim in life is to stop you from operating!

Sikorsky has unveiled the configuration of the Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator (HEX), a fully autonomous vertical-takeoff-and-landing prototype that will form the foundation for future product development. “There's lots of developments in fuel cells and batteries, but even with turbines that burn hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel, we don't know how the power generation part of this is going to play out," Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering Member Igor Cherepinsky, Sikorsky Innovations director, "So what we're developing is an aircraft architecture that's completely agnostic to the source of power—we are very interested in power distribution and power consumption and where the power comes from will change." https://buff.ly/3wLkntH #aerospace #aircraft #helicopter #hybrid #electricvehicles #fuelcell

In the automotive industry, hybrids were often the stepping stone to batteries. In aviation, batteries are the stepping stone to hybrids (powered by SAF). ""It is important to note that the battery electric aircraft we are seeing now in 2024 aren't the equivalent of a Tesla; they are the equivalent of a General Motors EV-1 [electric vehicle] from 1996," says Eric Bartsch, CEO of VerdeGo Aero, a company developing piston and turbine-powered hybrid electric systems for aircraft. In contrast to ground transportation, the electric revolution in the sky has less to do with batteries and more to do with electric motors, he says...." ""Allowing new liquid fuels, such as sustainable aviation fuel, and batteries to both play a role in powering electric motors, results in a vastly more capable aircraft than we can get on batteries alone," Bartsch says. "Hybrid aviation is definitely far more than a stepping stone for electric flight; it may be the endpoint of electric flight, and it is certainly the primary power source for electric flight in the coming decades.""
