Collaborating with Nokia, HMD Global took on the mantle of reviving the iconic brand, breathing new life into its storied legacy. Now ,HMD is dropping ‘Nokia’ branding for its own. HMD Global, a Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, and official brand licensee for Nokia on Friday said it would follow a multi-brand strategy ie: mobile phones and devices under the brand names of both HMD and Nokia will co-exist in the global markets. For those of us tracking the cutting-edge in telco, 1&1 Telecommunication SE's deployment using Rakuten Symphony platform is an important milestone — it is the first significant deployment outside of Rakuten Mobile using the learnings and platform they developed in the Japanese market. 1&1's CEO, Michael Martin, was kind enough to join a public forum at #MWC24, alongside Rabih, CBO of Rakuten Symphony and answer questions both from me and the audience. The unique architecture and foundation they've laid holds promise for new services and modern operations. Like the other pioneers driving open and cloud-based telco platforms, there's been lessons learned in that journey. Please follow the Vodafone Germany campaign to find out more about our work and the impact it has on driving forwards a more circular economy, particularly in the context of e-waste management in Ghana, one of our main operating countries. Drawing from my academic background in Industrial Ecology, I believe in the reduction of consumption as the first course of action for sustainability. However, we cannot ignore the fact that consumption of electronics is rising, and so is the amount of e-waste – at an alarming rate. A significant portion of this waste is illegally exported out of Europe into developing countries in Africa like Ghana where there is no proper infrastructure to deal with this sheer amount of waste. Closing the Loop is one of the few pioneering companies to export e-waste out of Africa and, step by step, helps balance the score with its “One for One” initiative, in which for every new phone purchased, a fee is levied to help recycle scrap phones across the African continent. #closingtheloop #oneforone #vodafone #industrialecology
