🔥 Today marks a monumental day for Ember 🔥 We're unveiling two major announcements we've been keeping under wraps for some time now. Brace yourselves! 🤫 Secret #1: I am immensely proud and thrilled to announce that, after years of meticulous planning and covert efforts (and countless sleepless nights), our embedded accounting partnership with HSBC UK is now live! The journey to bring this project to life has been extraordinarily challenging, but the tremendous opportunities it opens for business owners across the UK are even greater. The origins of our partnership trace back to September 2021, when I first presented at an Open Banking conference hosted by HSBC. From that moment, we began discussing the tremendous power of integrating embedded accounting and tax services directly within banking platforms to save businesses valuable time. Now, after mountains of hard work and dedication, here we are, witnessing that dream come to life. The passion that countless remarkable individuals have poured into this project has been nothing short of inspirational. 🤫 Secret #2: We've successfully raised £5 million 🚀 from some incredible investors—Valar Ventures LLC, Shapers, Viola FinTech and a bunch of awesome angels 😇—who share our vision for the future and are helping us drive forward to revolutionise the embedded accounting landscape. I had a great interview with Viola FinTech, our latest investor. As on most Sundays, I wake up early and find myself reflecting while I think about the week ahead. The interview helped shaped my thinking this morning. Here are some simple things that come to mind when I look back at my entrepreneurial journey: 1. My co-founders - Jamie, Tate and I have been at this, hard, since 2017. I don't know how I'd ever replicate the dynamic we have. Simply put, we have incredibly aligned values and are great at very different things. TL;DR - tremendous overlap on culture with diverse tools respectively. 2. Mission - I will ONLY get involved in companies that have a purpose beyond the bottom line. I'm a founding investor in Aeon Future Health, Tuesday Brewing Co. (non-alc beer), Katal Energy Inc., and of course ZayZoon. All of these businesses are driven to create positive impact to people, community and/or environment. TL;DR - If you're working for something purposeful, it doesn't feel like work. 3. Community - My first startup was Halo Networks, in 2000. The Calgary community helped me from day 0. Fast forward to ZayZoon (day 4380) and the community invested $25M into the company before we took on institutional investors. Those that know me, know that I am passionate about Calgary's business community, especially technology. TL;DR - Be an active participant, help and don't be shy about asking for help. I'm 24 years into my career as a founder. I've never worked harder but I've never had more fun and I've never been in a position to create this kind of impact. For that, I'm grateful, as I sit here sipping my coffee thinking about how we move ZayZoon forward this week with my amazing co-founders and team. For those reading this, whatever stage you're at, feeling like you've got it figured out, struggling with imposter syndrome or even experiencing a massive failure (most of us have) -- this is a marathon, get up and keep grinding, embrace the pain and you'll look back and be astonished at the distance you've travelled and the impact you've had.
