UNDP, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and GLEIF have embarked on Project Savannah, an initiative poised to redefine global standards for MSMEs in sustainability. This venture goes beyond merely improving sustainability reporting; it seeks to revolutionize the landscape by introducing digital sustainability credentials. The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is central to this transformative effort, which emerges as a pivotal element for fostering transparency and trust in the corporate sector.   This report proposes a baseline set of metrics for common adoption by MSMEs globally, discusses the technology that can be harnessed to power MSME reporting, and the opportunities available.    Leveraging the LEI, Project Savannah is setting up a global, verified, and consent-based digital identity framework for MSMEs, facilitating the frictionless exchange of verified ESG credentials. This opens new avenues for financing and international trade and solidifies the critical role of GLEIF in expanding access to this global identity standard for MSMEs.   Project Savannah represents a monumental stride toward a future marked by enhanced sustainability, transparency, and mutual trust. It heralds a new era where MSMEs are empowered to integrate into the global economy more sustainably and transparently. 90% of businesses and 70% of employment worldwide are represented by this one industry itself. Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, commonly called MSMEs. 📈 This fact itself says how much this sector contributes to the growth of emerging economies, like: --> Contributing 50% of GDP worldwide --> Creation of jobs --> Fostering local economies and communities Apart from these things, one fascinating factor that sets it apart? Their ability to adapt to circular economy principles which focus on creating systems that are both sustainable and socially unbiased.   This shows that MSMEs can become a hub for creating innovative and sustainable products and services prioritizing both environmental impact and community well-being.    📉 With that being said, this industry faces its fair share of challenges like:   --> Easy access to finance and credit  --> Technology Adoption  --> Regulatory and compliance issues     💫 What can be the way out?  Adequate support from government and international organizations.     This support is essential for MSMEs to significantly contribute to SDG Goals 2030, which aims to eliminate problems like economic crisis, fiscal limitations, and environmental threats faced by many countries.     Since over 90% of businesses globally are represented by MSMEs, they play a crucial role in addressing these challenges.   Building a sustainable future demands a human-centric approach, and this sector holds the key.    Having my own venture Discrete Circuits Pvt. Today, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to economic and social development. MSMEs drive innovation, foster value-adding activities, participate in global supply chains, and promote inclusive growth through job creation.   However, MSMEs often need help with complex Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting frameworks, high costs, and limited access to technology. Adopted unanimously in 2015 by all UN Member States, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets, and 231 unique indicators, shapes the direction of global and national development policies and offers new entry points and opportunities for bridging the divide between human rights and development. It serves as the overall framework to guide global and national development action. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At their heart, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an urgent call to action for all countries in a global partnership. The National Science and Technology Park (NSTP), has achieved distinction by being recognized among the top 50 Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Model Zones. This recognition was conferred by the Global Alliance of Special Economic Zones during the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, following a rigorous evaluation of 200 global contenders.   Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Model Zones serve as pivotal sources of research and inspiration. Acknowledged during the UNCTAD World Investment Forum, these zones stand at the forefront of innovation, epitomizing a steadfast commitment to sustainable development, the promotion of SDG-focused investments, and the rigorous adherence to high standards in social, environmental, and governance practices.   NSTP's inclusion among the chosen 50 SDG Model Zones stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to SDGs. The selection process emphasized criteria including a strategic focus on attracting investment in “SDG-relevant” sectors and activities, reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets and indicators, and the promotion of inclusive growth, including programs for women, youth, and rural entrepreneurs. The exemplification of its commitment to inclusive growth is evident from NSTP programs such as the Rising Stars Startup Competition and Sustainable Innovation). Under the tutelage of Dr Rizwan Riaz, NSTP is committed to leading the way toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.   GASEZ, a distinguished alliance formed in 2022, comprises an impressive consortium of founding members and partners, including UNCTAD, IASP - International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation, Green Partnership of Industrial Parks China (GPIPC), National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones (NAFTZ), Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO), Asociación de Zonas Francas de las Américas - AZFA, FEMOZA - The World Free & Special Economic Zones Federation, and World Free Zones Organization ("World FZO").   Together, these organizations initiated GASEZ with a mission to advance a new generation of Special Economic Zones for sustainable development. 🎓 Exciting Announcement: Just Earned the Certificate in "Developing and Implementing Science, Technology, and Innovation for SDGs Roadmaps"! 🚀 This Course (MOOC) was developed by the Division of Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Quick summary of the course 💼✨: 1️⃣ Explain the significance of STI for SDGs Roadmaps and its pivotal role in advancing both national and global agendas. 2️⃣ Describe the various levels and purposes of SDGs Roadmaps, understanding their scope and potential impact. 3️⃣ Outline the six-step process involved in developing STI for SDGs Roadmaps, enabling effective planning and implementation. 4️⃣ Discuss the methodologies available for creating STI for SDGs Roadmaps and identify the necessary support mechanisms required for successful execution. 5️⃣ Differentiate between the roles of governments and donors in the STI for SDGs Roadmaps process, understanding their respective contributions and responsibilities.
