As spring sweeps across #variouscountries, bringing warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, millions #worldwide brace themselves for the seasonal onslaught of allergies. Recent #studies indicate a notable increase in pollen levels across regions, attributed to #climate shifts, changes in vegetation, and urbanization. In response, the #allergy testing market is witnessing a surge in innovation and development, propelled by advancements in precision medicine and #personalized medical #approaches. GlobalData Plc, a leading data and analytics company, reports a promising outlook for the allergy testing market, with 20 in vitro #diagnostic (IVD) devices currently in the pipeline and two undergoing clinical trials. According to GlobalData’s Product #Databases, there are presently 58 Immunoglobulin E (IgE) allergy blood IVD devices available on the #market. These devices play a critical role in identifying allergens triggering allergic reactions, enabling tailored treatment plans for patients. Selena Yu, Senior Medical Analyst at GlobalData, underscores the significance of allergy testing, particularly in the context of seasonal allergies, alongside food and environmental sensitivities. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, heightened awareness and proactive healthcare behaviors have led to increased interest in allergy testing among individuals seeking a comprehensive understanding of their health. Yu comments, “The incidence of allergies has witnessed a steady rise over the past two centuries, driven by changes in diets and environments. Allergy testing serves as an invaluable tool in providing patients with insights into their specific triggers, empowering them to make informed decisions regarding their health management.” The advent of minimally invasive, blood-based allergy tests marks a notable advancement in the field, offering enhanced convenience and patient comfort compared to traditional prick tests. These tests, some of which can cover over 200 different allergens in a single assessment, are proving to be highly efficient and accessible, driving adoption rates among individuals of all ages. Yu emphasizes, “The transition towards blood-based allergy tests signifies a paradigm shift in healthcare, not only in allergy diagnostics but also in various other disease areas such as cancer screening. Accessibility and patient comfort are key drivers in encouraging individuals to undergo testing, particularly in populations like children who may experience discomfort with traditional testing methods.” As the allergy testing market continues to evolve and expand, fueled by technological advancements and growing demand for personalized healthcare solutions, stakeholders are poised to capitalize on opportunities to improve patient outcomes and quality of life amidst the challenges posed by allergic conditions. #News #Medlr #Healthnews #Healthcare #Health

This week, I ran across a major loophole in ordering medicines online. I was buying a low-dose (5 mg) statin, named as Rosday in the prescription. Since this is an Rx medicine and I was buying it for the first time, Tata 1mg required me to upload my prescription along with my order, which I did. And I received a call from a doctor at 1mg to approve my purchase. The doctor inquired about the reason for buying, what disease I was diagnosed with, allergies etc. But both the doctor and I missed an important detail. The medicine I had placed in my cart was not Rosday, it was Rosday Gold. The critical difference - Rosday is a pure statin intended to lower lipid levels in blood. Rosday Gold is a medicine for patients at high risk of heart attack or stroke, combining a statin with Aspirin (blood thinner) and Clopidogrel. Definitely, this was NOT the drug mentioned in the prescription. 3 strips of Rosday Gold were delivered home. And we came to know only when we were checking the prescription against the dosage, that we had the wrong medicine. I missed it, my dad caught it. One could argue that the naming of the medicines is confusing. But the naming of prescription (Rx) medicines is not done keeping end consumers in mind - it's done for doctors and pharmacies. One could argue that it was my fault for ordering the wrong medicine. But, had I purchased over the counter, there is no way a pharmacist would have made the mistake I did. They are the experts in reading prescriptions, even when I can't make out what is written. Whose responsibility is it, to deliver the right Rx Medicine as per the prescription? In my opinion, online pharmacies like 1Mg can deploy a simple AI tool which reads prescriptions and at least asks us to double check 'You seem to have ordered the wrong medicine'. Somewhat like Google's life saving forgotten attachment or wrong bob reminder. Or, there should be a pharmacist (not a doctor) who double checks prescriptions before fulfilling them. I understand that like all online sellers, pharmacies want to offer convenience and quick delivery. But precision and safety is a hygiene factor in their business which should never be compromised. Maybe only a few customers will make errors, but medicine is a field with very narrow tolerance for errors.

For my Seniors friends from the National Institute on Aging - Starting a new medication? Here’s what to know. Medications can help us live longer and healthier lives, but mixing certain drugs and supplements or taking medications incorrectly can be dangerous. That’s why it’s important to talk to a health care provider before starting any new prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medication, or supplement to ensure that your provider knows everything else you are taking. Before starting a new medicine, be sure to: Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you may have about taking a new medication. Discuss any allergies or problems you have experienced with other medicines with your health care provider. Find out if you’ll need to change or stop taking any of your other prescriptions, OTC medicines, or supplements. Write down the name of the drug, the dose, and why it’s being prescribed for you. Note any special instructions for how to take the medicine. https://lnkd.in/eCRuJbbD

Community dispensing, where medications are provided to patients by pharmacists in retail settings like pharmacies, is prone to several common errors. These errors can have serious consequences for patient safety. Here are some of the most common errors in community dispensing: ✅Medication Mix-Ups: Pharmacists may accidentally dispense the wrong medication due to similar sounding or looking drug names (LASA medications) or confusion between different formulations (e.g., immediate-release vs. extended-release). ✅Incorrect Dosage: Errors in dosage can occur when pharmacists misinterpret or miswrite prescription instructions, leading to patients receiving too much or too little of a medication. ✅Labeling Errors: Mistakes in labeling medications, such as incorrect patient names, drug names, dosages, or instructions, can lead to patients taking the wrong medication or incorrect dosages. ✅Drug Interactions: Failure to identify potential interactions between medications prescribed to the same patient can result in adverse effects or reduced efficacy of treatments. ✅Allergy Checking: Not adequately verifying patient allergies before dispensing medications can lead to patients receiving medications they are allergic to, causing allergic reactions. ✅Patient Counseling: Insufficient or lack of patient counseling on how to properly take medications, potential side effects, and interactions can lead to misunderstanding or improper use of medications. ✅Expired Medications: Dispensing medications that are past their expiration date can compromise their effectiveness and safety. ✅Patient Identification: Errors in identifying patients correctly when dispensing medications can result in medications being given to the wrong individual. To minimize these errors, pharmacists and pharmacy staff employ several strategies: - Using electronic prescribing and dispensing systems that flag potential errors. - Double-checking prescriptions and labels for accuracy before dispensing. - Educating patients about their medications, including how to take them and what to expect. - Ensuring proper storage and handling of medications to maintain their efficacy. - Regularly updating knowledge on medications and their interactions. By implementing these measures and maintaining a focus on patient safety, community pharmacies can reduce the occurrence of dispensing errors and ensure that patients receive the correct medications and information they need for optimal health outcomes.
