The battle between private credit investors and investment bank is intensifying, signaling that the market could be seeing compression.  In February, the Federal Reserve estimated that the size of the private credit asset class had grown larger than leveraged loans and the high-yield bond market. Reuters reports that Morgan Stanley is urging a strategic shift in the corporate bond landscape as 2024 maturities loom. In light of the suspicion that the Federal Reserve is approaching the end of its rate-hiking cycle, the bank recommends a focus on higher-quality investment-grade and high-yield bonds. While 2023 saw the majority of junk bonds maturing successfully, Morgan Stanley highlights potential risks with another $73 billion maturing in the next 18 months, rising to $125 billion in the next six months. This situation emphasizes the need for a cautious approach in the evolving landscape of corporate bonds. "Unlike loan borrowers, which have seen interest costs steadily creeping up, (high-yield) issuers will face a more dramatic 'sticker shock' of higher coupons," Morgan Stanley noted.
