It was interesting and thought provoking at The CLA conference today. Thank you James Shepherd for the invitation.
Two of the presentations stood out for me:
Heather Hancock - made the point that farming is being weaned off a support system and new markets are immature and unpredictable. But we must embrace change and be brave to take the next steps to sustainable and profitable businesses together - not necessarily always with all the information we would like to have. We need to focus on optimism, learning, forming coalitions and giving confidence to our community.
Neil Heseltine talked about the catalyst that changed his whole farm in the form of the Limestone Country Project and how stock numbers, species, breed and grazing timings can significantly influence the benefit to nature on the farm. That, for him, putting nature and the environment at the forefront of the decision making has resulted in better profit, better nature and better wellbeing for him and his family. Catch up with Saving our Wild Isles from about 7 minutes onwards to find out more about his farm. https://lnkd.in/dZPP-FTe
Alongside this, an inspiring introduction from CLA president Victoria Vyvyan, a great presentation from Tim Hopkin from The Land App, a retailer perspective from M&S, conversations about responsible access and an insight into current policy aspirations from Steve Barclay including the announcement of a third £5M round of investment readiness funding and a further £45M of farm innovation funding. https://lnkd.in/e2u2mskN We also heard about what the shadow SoS Steve Reed would support. Finally, we heard the reflections of the next farming generation.
My overall take home reflection was that we need to keep the conversations going: about data, farm assurance and consumer demand for sustainable produce, business risk and reward, what ELMS and other funding could do to help, what the opportunities are to engage and support local rural communities; how to engender a love for nature in order to protect it and farm sustainably and how to make the whole thing joined up.
We can do this 💪 we just need to work together. 🙌 Let’s get the different perspectives talking more to generate ideas and find solutions.
Thanks to all involved.
